Fall fashion will be hitting the stores soon. As we anticipate cooler temps, now is a good time to plan what you will add to your wardrobe even if you can’t actually WEAR any of it just yet.
Planning is the best approach to having a wardrobe that feels supportive and reflective of you. When you consider each purchase, weighing whether it will contribute to your image story or not, you build a wardrobe that has fewer things but better things.
To keep your wardrobe exciting, look for pieces with presence and interest that reflect your personal style: a well-cut trouser, a dramatic brooch or scarf, a statement coat, or a sensible yet chic flat.
Rather than focusing on one “it” item, this season provides a mix to give us the freedom to express ourselves. Whether you love classics or vintage, neutrals or colors, feminine or masculine, this season has it. The choice is yours. Take your time and see what treasures you uncover.
This Year’s Color Story
Last year’s top color was chocolate brown. This season, brown is still very present along with other earth tones like avocado green, brick red, terra cotta, and grassy green. The big color story this year, after taking a year off, is red from bright to earthy to burgundy.
If you love neutrals, don’t despair. There are many gorgeous, soft neutrals like almond, soft white, taupe and gray. Black is, of course, also present. The color pops this season include yellow, cobalt, and Kelly green. One unexpected color that emerged this season is soft pink, which pairs beautifully with many colors.
Your Top Trends
There are many trends each year, yet the ones that stand out this season are reptile, texture (feathers, fringe, and fur), high necks, volume, brooches, top handle bags, and velvet.
Power dressing is not a new fall trend. In fact, it’s in every fall season just like animal print. This season, however, we are seeing a softer approach to tailoring: relaxed trousers, long blazers, skirt suits and pieces that are not overly corporate.
One Great Investment
When it comes to wardrobe investments, a strong argument can be made for a gorgeous coat or a jacket. If it’s been a while since you updated yours, put it on your wish list. Often, the coat becomes the outfit with no need to think too much about what’s underneath. Consider your climate and lifestyle when making your selection – trench, overcoat, bomber, or car coat? Ask yourself which one you will wear on repeat. The two I’ve worn the most the last few years are a cozy boyfriend blazer and a cropped lightweight puffer.
In Stores Now
Aside from the list above, here’s what I’m seeing in the stores.
- Wider leg pants, jeans & track pants. Wider leg is not new; however, we are seeing a lot more of this style in the stores for fall. My recommendation is to consider your frame and to go with a width that is not overwhelming. There are a variety of widths to choose from. Track pants are not new either. However, there are a lot more of them this year. There are a variety of styles from sporty to more polished for the office. I’m adding a pair to my fall wardrobe for sure.
- Scarves. Lots of the handkerchief size are still adorning many mannequin necks. This is an easy, inexpensive way to add pop to your outfit. I’m less inclined since I did this trend to death in the 90’s. But never say never. I have one or two I can try to bring into the fall rotation.
- Woven, textured flats. We are still seeing a lot of Mary Jane styles, but we are also seeing a lot of basket weaves and woven leathers. I have my eye on an olive green flat by FitFlop. This style is less girlie than a traditional ballet flat.
- Belts. This outfit finisher is everywhere this season. I’m seeing lots of animal print, suede, woven, and more. Match your belt to your top if you want your torso to appear longer or match your belt to your pants if you’d like your legs to look longer. Be cautious with belts as they add width to your waistline.
- Squishy clutches and bags. You will always see structured bags in the fall, but it is a fun departure to try a bag you can just throw under your arm and go. Bonus points if it has a strap!
- Corduroy and Suede. We are seeing a lot of suede on just about everything. I prefer it in smaller doses like a bag, shoe or belt because I’m a bit too messy to keep a suede jacket pristine. I was surprised to recently see corduroy pants in a shop I frequent, and a client has added a pair to her fall wardrobe (this is new territory for her). I always have corduroy pieces in my fall wardrobe regardless of trends
