Focusing on Wellness

August 3, 2023 by Bethany Siggins

August is National Wellness Month. I can think of no better time to check in with yourself than at the tail end of summer. After all, we’ve been traveling, somewhat off our schedules (and perhaps our eating routines) and facing the hectic fall months ahead.

What Is National Wellness Month?

During the month of August, we focus on our well-being such as self-care rituals, stress management and healthy routines. What those look like for me will vary from what they look like for you.

What are Some Ideas?

In May, I explained how tidying your wardrobe is good for your mental health. Read that post here. Besides tidying, what else can you do? A few wellness routines I’ve enjoyed include yoga, walking, pranayama (breathwork) and a once-a-month massage. None of it is indulgent. In fact, it is imperative to focus on your well-being. There’s only one you in the world, and we need you to take good care of you to remain balanced, healthy, and vibrant.

My Journey Began in 2019

yogawellness 1024x682 - Focusing on Wellness

Over the course of several years, I’ve shared my wellness journey in blog posts, on my podcast, in social media posts and in my monthly newsletters. It all started with twice-a-week yoga in January 2019. After months of hearing the word “yoga” run through my head, I gave in and took up yoga. That was the start of something new and better for me. I didn’t realize then how good yoga and the other healthy habits to follow would be for me. I wasn’t conscious that I was starting a wellness journey. Yet, over 3-1/2 years later, it is a journey where I continue to add layers. My goals have always been to feel as good as I can and to be kind to my mind and body.

Is it Too Late?

Sometimes we look at what someone else is doing and discourage ourselves from making changes. The perfectionist might think a walk around the block is a waste of time when the neighbor is training for a marathon. Not true! A walk around the block is immensely better for you than no walk around the block. Start where you can. Don’t look at what anyone else is doing, especially if it will discourage you from trying. Nothing done for the sake of your well-being is ever a waste of time.

Ideas for Getting Started

Don’t knock a simple, mindful walk. Walks are helpful for clearing your mind, reducing stress, getting mentally unstuck and finding balance. If a walk to the end of your street and back is all you can do, do it. If a 10-minute bath on Sunday nights is all you have time for, take the plunge.

If you are stuck and not sure where to start, do a little self-reflecting and set a goal that is fail-proof. One idea: stretch for 10 minutes two days per week. Another idea: a simple bedtime routine will help you relax and sleep better. It can be something like lavender spray on your pillow and 2 minutes of deep breathing before lights out, for example. One tiny seed planted and nurtured will bloom.

I Set a Reasonable Goal

When I started my wellness journey, twice-a week yoga felt manageable. That was all I asked of myself, and that was all I did for a while. I slowly added layers to my wellness routine like more frequent yoga, healthier eating, and warm baths in the cooler months. I knew if I asked too much of myself, I would not stick with it, and I would get discouraged. I wanted this to stick for good, and I knew the best way to do that was to make it EASY.

COVID Altered My Plan

A year after I started my wellness journey, COVID happened. There were a couple of weeks of uncertainty before I started doing yoga at home using YouTube. Three years later, I’m still doing yoga at home in my closet first thing in the morning. While it seemed that COVID would take me off track, it was the thing that pushed me to enrich my yoga experience. I follow many yoga instructors now, which varies my routine. Sometimes I have 30 minutes for a full flow, and other days I only have 10 minutes. Regardless, I feel accomplished and happy.

Why does wellness matter?

Wellness matters because you matter. You are worth it. Things that are good for your body are GREAT for your mind. All of it works together. When you are feeling your best, your interactions improve, and your life turns in a positive direction.

Not feeling it?

Don’t wait to feel like you want to do it. Just start. The good feelings will follow, I promise. Wishing you a beautiful month of checking in and taking great care of you. Need encouragement? Message me. I’d be happy to offer my support.

Wardrobe Edit Inspired by Project 333

May 7, 2021 by Bethany Siggins

What is Project 333?

If you’ve not heard of Project 333, here’s the premise: Wear 33 pieces of clothing (including jewelry, shoes and bags) for 3 months. Pack the rest of your wardrobe out of sight. I don’t know about you, but that kind of frightens me.

Who created it and why?

Project 333 was created by Courtney Carver. Courtney had developed a habit of buying to feel better and to show others she was accomplished during a high-pressure period of her life. She was worn out and in debt, and, eventually, she fell seriously ill. It was from that place of debilitation, Courtney realized she had to make serious and drastic changes. Project 333 was born. Eventually, she wrote a book, and my husband gave it to me for Christmas.

Are 33 pieces enough?

Yes, 33 pieces are more than enough to create many outfits for a 3-month period. As long as your pieces work together, you can interchange tops, bottoms, accessories and jackets to create a variety of outfits, much more than 90 outfits, in fact. We call this a wardrobe capsule in my business.

My Favorite Takeaways

Clothing and buying more are not fixes for other things going on in your life. I have been there and done that. When we were new to Seattle, I spent my downtime shopping at local Goodwill and resale stores. I didn’t need more. I was simply decompressing from the stress. However, I came away from our time in Seattle with quite a few resale treasures that I still own. I love them, and I’m glad I have them. Be careful as you shop. The best policy is to buy the piece if it truly fills a void in your closet, rather than a void in your life.

Refuse to live in fear of not having enough. I have clients who have survived traumas. One common thread is their wardrobes have far more pieces than they could ever wear. They have enough, but they continue to buy from a place of fear. They think the new thing will help them feel better or feel more secure. One more thing is not the answer. Walk away from it and spend time doing something else that nourishes you. You have enough.

Adopt a “one is enough” philosophy wherever you can. This works with your wardrobe, but it works in many other areas, too. Have you ever known someone who always has multiples of things? 80 rolls of toilet paper in the garage, 10 candles in the bathroom cabinet, etc. A lot of older baby boomers do this, likely stemming from not having enough post WWII. I am guilty of this in my closet: 15 pairs of jeans, 15 graphic tees, 20 jackets, etc. Hey, I love fashion. Sue me! I’m not very good at “one is enough,” obviously. Here’s the thing about “one is enough.” It is. If the piece you have is dirty, you’ll wear something else. You’ll buy another one if something happens to it. You don’t need a backup, especially if you don’t love it as much as your #1.

“Just in case” means never most of the time. I’m guilty of this, too. I never go to black tie events, but maybe I will one day. So, I have a lovely long dress I’ve held onto for two years “just in case.” Many of my clients hold onto a black dress for funerals. Newsflash, no one wears black to funerals anymore. How many funerals do you attend and how often? If “almost none” and “almost never” are your answers, let go of the black dress. On the occasion of a funeral, I bet you have a non-black dress or a blouse and a skirt you can wear. If not, you can buy it when you need it.

Am I doing Project 333?

No. However, all of the above spoke to me. In fact, it inspired me to empty a bag full of clothing from my dresser drawers and closet (including the two pieces below). My wardrobe was already well-edited, mind you. As someone who works in fashion and dresses to express my personality and style, a 33-piece capsule would feel boring and stifling, just as Courtney’s overstuffed closet stifled her. But I do have favorites I wear many times over other things.

Admittedly, since removing the pieces from my closet, it has been easier to get dressed. I can better see the pieces I love to wear. Sometimes we can’t see a piece even when we are looking at it because there are too many things around it demanding attention. I feel lighter letting go of pieces I think I should be wearing, but I’m not. It’s a mental lift. I recently cleared the Safari cache on my phone and “lost” oodles of tabs I had open: articles I planned to read “one day,” products to look into, etc. It’s fine. I’ll live. Now, my phone feels lighter!

Your Assignment

You don’t have to do Project 333 either unless it speaks to you. However, I would love for you to take something from this post and apply it. Clear out some “just in case” pieces and subpar back ups. You don’t have to donate them yet. Just see if you can live without them for a while. If you miss something, go get it. If you never miss them, donate them. There’s a lot of need for your extras in our communities.

A Gentle Reminder

Books like Project 333 remind us that we do not need as much as we think we do. Further, we do not have to hold onto things until they are worn out or threadbare (guilty). My wish for your closet is for you to see a “celebration” of the woman you are today, not the woman you were 10 years ago or the woman you hope to be in 10 lbs.

Don’t be confident in what you wear. Be confident in who you are.

The Birth of a Podcast

February 26, 2019 by Bethany Siggins

fullsizeoutput 7cea - The Birth of a PodcastI called my brother last fall to thank him for the advice he had given me regarding my car (he’s in the business). Then we started catching up on other things. He asked how I was doing since our move from Seattle, WA back to Dallas after 3-1/2 years away. The talk turned to my business, which was one reason for our return – I have clients in Dallas where I built my image consulting business. I told him my business was somewhat on the back-burner as I settled us in our home and into our “normal” routine.

He sensed I wanted to do more to engage my creative side, and he suggested I start a podcast as a way to share my thoughts and ideas in a way that is quick and convenient. As a blogger himself, he knows how long one blog post takes to write, post onto one’s website (complete with links and photos) and share across media channels. I had several blog post ideas floating around my head at the time of our chat, and no time to write them.

I’ll be honest, I never listen to podcasts. I’m that girl who has a running list of TED talks to watch, business books to read, and oodles of articles to review in my inbox. Adding “listen to podcasts” to this list of things I’m not accomplishing is too much!

However, I loved the idea of sharing my thoughts and encouragement to those who do enjoy podcasts, so I filed the idea away as a strong possibility. I floated the idea past a few friends, and everyone was encouraging. Along came the New Year, and by early February, I was getting restless to learn more. I set up a call with my brother, and he explained how easy it is to create a podcast using Anchor (a free app available through the App Store).

A week went by, and he and I were texting about something else when he wrote (about my podcast), “Get started.” I’ll admit, I need a push sometimes. It was what I needed to hear.

Not long after I received that text, I created Bethany Says: Beauty, Style & You. My podcast is for everyone who wants to feel more in tuned with themselves, more confident and more relaxed in their own skin.

Admittedly, in Episode One I was kind of nervous, and I’m not sure it sounds much like me. I think I was concerned about enunciating my words, not speaking too fast and making my voice a bit more “NPR” than it is naturally. Silly me! I did not know how to create segments for the episode, so my first episode is one long six-minute take. Whew! Despite its lack of “slick,” I published it. I don’t strive for perfection anymore.img 2095 - The Birth of a Podcast

Since then, I’ve published a second episode, which does have a musical intro and a musical close (I’m so fancy). And I think it sounds a bit more like me. A friend of mine said to just be myself on the podcast because that is what people will connect with. She said she wants to hear my signature giggle. I’ll try! Episode three is coming this week. I’ll be covering my take-aways from Marie Kondo’s book, “the life-changing magic of tidying up.” I’ve been helping clients organize their wardrobes for ten years, and I love the new insight I gained from her book.

Thanks for taking this new journey with me. Subscribe to my podcast if that is your thing. Much more to come!

P.S. Tune in to my brother’s podcast, The Sales Life with Marsh Buice. He’s at 362 episodes and counting. He is a natural cheerleader who sets an energetic tone for your day. You need not be in sales to get a boost from his wisdom.
