Fall Fashion Colors & Trends 2023

September 6, 2023 by Bethany Siggins

Fall 2023 Overview

The upcoming fall season is not for the shrinking violet. After a thorough review of the fall fashion runway shows, I saw a lot of big shapes, bold colors, oodles of textures and plenty of razzle dazzle with silver taking center stage. This year, fall fashion embraces a harmonious blend of retro and futuristic elements.

Oversized coats with bold patterns and rich textures dominate, providing both warmth and statement style. This season shines a spotlight on earthy tones like rust, olive, and mustard, while metallic accents and glossy finishes add a futuristic twist. Long skirts and chunky knit sweaters return for another season, offering comfort and elegance.

On the accessories front, there was a focus on oversized bags, slouchy boots, and large gold jewelry. Sustainable and ethically sourced materials are included, reflecting the industry’s growing commitment to environmental consciousness. This season’s trends blend nostalgia with innovation for a captivating autumn wardrobe.

Fall Fashion Colors

The 2023 fall fashion colors encourage creativity, allowing individuals to express their style through a harmonious fusion of tones. The top fall fashion colors for 2023 embrace a rich and diverse palette, reflecting a blend of traditional and contemporary influences.

Earthy greens and terracotta tones offer a grounded and comforting aesthetic. Complementary to these colors are vibrant shades such as bright blue and fiery red, injecting energy into the season.

Muted tones like Conch Shell and Burnt Sienna (Pantone names) provide a delicate contrast. Not featured in my palette below but not to be missed are oodles of metallic clothing, especially silver, lending a touch of glamour.

Each year, Pantone publishes a Fashion Color Trend Report for both New York Fashion Week and London Fashion Week. As I did in my Fall/Winter 2022 Color Report last August, I’ve combined the colors of the two fashion weeks into one cohesive palette shown below.

BestJpg FallWinter 2023 - Fall Fashion Colors & Trends 2023

If you were to compare the two palettes (2022 and 2023), you’d find similar tones between them. One marked difference this year is the addition of more reds. Red is the color of the season.

Once again, this year there are colors one would typically associate with spring like Carnival Glass, Red Orange, and High Visibility.

The neutrals this season include Doe, Forest Night, and Eclipse. Black also plays a big role in fall fashion this year; however, don’t we have plenty of black?

My Favorite Fall Colors

When I looked over the palette, the colors that jumped out to me are Rose Violet, Olive Oil and Blue Atoll. These colors would make a dynamic color combination in a print!

How to Choose?

As I have emphasized in the past, it is important to know your personal style when considering seasonal fashion trends. Those with a classic style can skip the eye-popping colors, for example, while those with a feminine style may overlook the menswear trends. Our style preferences are often a blend of styles, so if you need guidance, I suggest working with me to pinpoint your personal style.

It’s a Season for Fun

My main takeaway from the fall fashion trends is to not take oneself too seriously – have fun and play more. The best way to know what works for you is to stay open, be curious and be willing to experiment. Remember, there is no such thing as failure in fashion. The true failure is not having tried at all, staying in one’s comfort zone.

Fall Shopping Catalog & the Fashion Runways

Shop the items in these collages plus a LOT more of my personal favorites in my Fall 2023 catalog here. Some of the items in this catalog are affiliated meaning I receive a small commission when you purchase directly from the links. This is always appreciated and one way of supporting my small business.

If you’d like to see a sampling of the fall fashion runways, look at my Runway board on Pinterest. Keep in mind, the runway is intentionally theatrical and sensational. Dial these ideas back to make them work for real life. This board goes back many fall seasons. 2023 fashion trends end where the graffiti starts (2022).

Fall Fashion 2021

September 2, 2021 by Bethany Siggins

Depending on where you are located, it may or may not feel like fall is in the air. Here in Dallas, it decidedly does not. However, we will remain hopeful for cooler temperatures and begin planning our fall wardrobes, nevertheless.

Before we get into my personal recommendations, let’s look at the general trends of the season beginning with color.

Top Trends

Shopping 1024x682 - Fall Fashion 2021

A Color Story

There are tons of neutrals this season with autumn shades leading the pack: rusty reds, deep golden tones, and dark olive. As if to perk us up, designers also gave us bright colors including hot pink, poppy red and marigold. If I had to pick a color of the season, it’s cinnamon (like the color I’m holding in the photo above). If warm tones don’t work as well with your coloring, do smaller pops of it with a handbag, a boot or a belt.

Knits

Knitwear is everywhere. You’ll see lots of cozy sweaters, sweater tops, vests, dresses, skirts and coats. If you live in a warmer climate like me, you might opt for something that is 100% cotton. Cable knits remain popular, as well as slim cashmere and Fair Isle sweaters.

Take up Space

Oversized outerwear is also a hot trend, as well as statement sleeves and ruffles. You will see a lot of bomber jackets and puffer coats this fall. Every sleeve seems to have volume or a statement cuff. The spring romance has bled into fall with tiered dresses and delicate fabrics.

Boots

The statement boot continues as a strong trend. Pick your poison. It’s all “in,” especially any boots with a platform sole. There are over the knee, lug soles and even boots that look like armor.

Tailoring

The boxy, strong shoulder blazer in a plaid or a texture is the hottest third piece this season. Pair it with a beautifully draped pair of trousers.

Cinched Waistlines

Although the outerwear is big, waistlines are visible in high-waisted jeans and trousers. There were a lot of belts on the runway. Check yours to see what needs an update.

Fashionista’s Favorite Collections

To get a visual on some of these trends, take a quick look at Fashionista’s favorite collections of Fall 2021.

My Recommendations

A Sweater Knit

MadewellVest 806x1024 - Fall Fashion 2021

One can never go wrong with a simple third piece that you can throw on over anything. This season is all about a sweater vest. This one (photo above) from Madewell can be worn alone, over a t-shirt or over a blouse as needed. A close runner up is a short-sleeved sweater that can be worn alone while it’s warm and under a blazer once it cools down. For more coverage and warmth, here’s a super fun rainbow-colored sweater cardigan by Farm Rio. Try this Madewell simple long cardigan for the office.

Casual Jacket or Vest

BrooklynBomber - Fall Fashion 2021

I love all jacket styles, but my #1 choice this season is a lightweight bomber jacket. The reason I favor a bomber is there’s extra room to wear it over your sweaters, and it has a chill, relaxed vibe. The Athleta Brooklyn bomber (photo above) is sporty, but you can dress it up with a blouse, jeans and heels. For something more casual, I love the Everlane Cinchable Chore Jacket. And this rosy colored chore jacket by Madewell is also great.

A vest is great for a warmer climate like Dallas, but you can wear it over a cashmere sweater in cooler climates, too. A vest has a tough vibe to it. I’m still crushing on this vest by Bernardo. I have this Barbour vest in navy, and it’s one of my favorite third pieces.

Slip on Boots

SlipOnBoot - Fall Fashion 2021

I like ease with my clothing, and there’s nothing easier than a slip-on Chelsea boot. I prefer a lug sole like these from Nordstrom Rack or these from Madewell. However, Chelsea boots come in all varieties like this dressy block heel (photo above) by Madewell. Get an ankle rain boot before you need it. You’ll be thanking me during a winter downpour. I like these from J. Crew Factory and these from LOFT.

Loafers

Loafers - Fall Fashion 2021

I’ve been trying to convincing just about everyone that they need a heeled loafer. I know they aren’t for everyone, but I sure love mine. Preppy dressing is super hot this season. Wear loafers with jeans and your favorite crisp top, and you’re done. Franco Sarto makes a nice one for a good price (photo above). This gray wedge style by Clarks is funky yet cool. If you’re ready to go “out there,” this Tory Burch loafer with shearling on top of the loafer is great.

One Great Top

PinkForFall 683x1024 - Fall Fashion 2021

Your Zoom meeting tops need a refresh. As I was explaining in a recent Instagram post, I love blouses. They go well with jeans for a girls night or tucked into a pencil skirt for a dressy, sexier vibe. Ann Taylor is giving us some nice options like this crew neck with a heart print. This pleated satin blouse is a looser fit for those who like their tops to flow over their midsection. This cheetah print top by Rails is subtle.

Silk Scarf

SilkScarf - Fall Fashion 2021

Right now is a great time to wear a silky scarf to add interest and color to your outfit without adding a heavy layer. Remember it can double as a face mask in a pinch! I like mine tied to my handbag. I love this one by Kate Spade (photo above) and this one by Ann Taylor.

Fall Shopping Catalog

Don’t forget to check out the fall catalog I created recently. Although I can’t guarantee all the items are still in stock, it’s a great place to look for ideas. There are many more great options in the catalog beyond my recommendations above, so do check it out.

What I’ve Bought

BethanyBlueSweater 1024x768 - Fall Fashion 2021

So far, I’ve bought these sneakers, these boots and this belt. Two tops from Zara are on the way, this pink poplin shirt (part of their #joinlife collection) and this oversized floral one-shoulder top (photo above; it is presently sold out).

A friend recently tie dyed a silk blouse for me. Stay tuned for its unveiling. I bought a few pieces at the end of the winter season earlier this year, including the blue sweater above. Suffice to say, I’m set for fall/winter. How about you?

Your Fall Shopping List

October 8, 2020 by Bethany Siggins

Are We Still Shopping?

I’ve written blogs, produced videos and podcasted the last several months about simplifying your wardrobe, editing wisely and creating the wardrobe of your dreams. All of this suggests less buying. Perhaps. However, it mostly suggests using a lot more thought about what we have and what we need, which might lead to fewer purchases in the end. I think that’s a good thing. Fashionista reported results of a survey this summer which reflected we are still shopping, but we are putting more thought into our purchases. Their survey showed buyers were mostly picking up athleisure and basics like jeans, t-shirts, bras and underwear.

MadewellTote 1024x683 - Your Fall Shopping List
I got my fall shopping started with this Madewell tote.

What to Buy Now

Now that the seasons are changing, I wonder if there is a way to buy practically while adding spice to our fall wardrobes. I think so, and I’ve created the shopping recommendations below (with links to purchase) with that goal in mind. Spend first where it makes sense and where you will get your most use.

Look at Your Most Used Items First

Pieces we use over and over are handbags and shoes. This means you get your money’s worth, but it also means they wear out more quickly. When you assess your fall wardrobe, look through bags and shoes first. A good cobbler can restore scuffed bags and shoes, but if they are worse for the wear, replace them.

Next, look at your fall apparel. Be sure you have a great jacket above everything else because a jacket will get the most wear of any other apparel piece in your closet (assuming you live in a climate where the seasons change). Before we jump into my recommendations, let’s quickly review the top fall trends.

Fall 2020 Fashion Trends

In case you missed the rundown of the top trends for fall 2020 on my September podcast, here they are: shaggy coats, exaggerated fringe, moody florals, velvet suiting, Victorian blouses, pointed shoulders, ruffled collars, puffy sleeves, punk plaid, tailored 70’s silhouettes and slinky silhouettes, tough boots, chunky heels and platforms.

The top colors are lilac, powder blue, buttery tones, burnt orange, gold, petal pink, bright red, black and white, head-to-toe red and head-to-toe black. I love the unexpected addition of pastels to the fall season.

Opposites Attract

The styling for fall 2020 was a juxtaposition of opposites. We had lug sole boots with Victorian dresses, taffeta with latex, trousers with hoodies, street wear with work wear, and cut outs on modest silhouettes. I love wearing opposites in outfits. In fact, I spoke about it in a recent video. It keeps the outfit balanced, not too much of one thing.

Your Shopping List

Trends aside, here are my recommendations for Fall 2020.

Daytime Bag

TB Tote - Your Fall Shopping List

Because our evening events lean more casual these days as we gather on patios and in back yards, I recommend a day bag that you can use in the evening. My favorite style is the tote for its practicality. It easily fits everything, and the straps are usually long enough to comfortably wear on your shoulder. I recently purchased the Madewell Medium Transport tote (in the photo above), which I styled with a Tory Burch crossbody strap I’ve had for a couple of years. If you like a hands-free option, the Madewell tote comes with a thin crossbody strap, but it would look better with this blue and red strap from the Madewell x Kule collaboration.

A couple of other totes to consider are the Tory Burch soft pink ladylike tote (photo above), a dressier option, and the All Saints silver metallic tote, which is sure to turn heads.

Ankle Boots
ColeHaanChelsea 910x1024 - Your Fall Shopping List

I got deep into ankle boots during my time in Seattle, and I still love every pair. Sneakers aside, the ankle boot is the shoe style you will wear the most with your casual fall season outfits. I am partial to a lugsole boot right now, even if you have a feminine style. Who doesn’t need to feel a bit more tough and powerful these days? I like the black Madewell Andi Chelsea lugsole boot. On the slightly dressier side of ankle boots, I like the Cole Haan Valorie Bootie (photo to the right) and the Tory Burch Kira Bootie. If the Tory boots give you sticker shock, it is worth noting I have a pair of Tory Burch ankle boots from six years ago that still look as good as the day I bought them. Worth every penny.

Casual Jacket
BlancNoirJacket 668x1024 - Your Fall Shopping List

I am a jacket junkie. My recs include the LL Bean Ripstop Field Jacket. This lightweight jacket is great for an early fall ballgame or weekend errands. I fell for Blanc Noir in Seattle. I love this hooded moto (photo to the left). If you don’t have a moto jacket, the price on this one makes it a good candidate to test the waters. I also like their reversible bomber jacket because who doesn’t love two jackets in one? Sam Edelman has a short trench coat in a few colors. Lastly, the TopShop Shacket with contrast pockets is a jacket cut like a shirt (thus the name).

Straight Jeans
MadewellStraight 806x1024 - Your Fall Shopping List

Let’s face it, jeans are king in the fall. They look amazing with ankle boots and sweaters, the easiest, no-brainer outfit ever. My recommendation is a straight style because the looser, straight fit make them generally more flattering than a skinny jean. My favorites right now are the Madewell Perfect Vintage jeans. The Madewell Classic Straight jeans (photo to the right) are another good option. I like the wash on these jeans by Liverpool. Lastly, I love a bone colored jean in winter. They are a nice change of pace from the standard black, gray and blue. Everlane makes a nice pair. By the way, all of these jeans are high rise with an 11″ + rise. That will not work for short-waisted ladies. Instead, look for a mid-rise like this pair by Gap.

Standout Blouse
BlouseStandLookAwaySmaller 683x1024 - Your Fall Shopping List

With Zoom meetings continuing, bring in one or two eye-catching tops to stand out. White House Black Market has a couple of nice options. If you have warm coloring, try this red python print blouse. Otherwise, try this flattering teal smocked v-neck blouse. Animal print is always a winner. Veronica Beard has a lovely one. Be aware, this blouse is a final sale item. Lastly, I’m mad for this sheer MANGO ruffle printed blouse. Notice a trend? The blouses this season have oversized sleeves and a romantic flair.

Medium Width Belt
SezaneBeltBlouse - Your Fall Shopping List

Skip belts if you are large through your middle. Belts visually add weight and width. If you have a defined waistline, I recommend a medium width belt to add a finishing touch to your fall looks. After many years of the skinny style, belts with a more substantial width are “in.” I love the Artemis belt by Sezane (photo on the right). I am partial to the camel croco. This vegan leather snake print belt at Banana Republic is a nice change from standard brown and black and just as versatile. This dark brown croc leather belt from Club Monaco is chic.

Work from Home Wear
AllBirds - Your Fall Shopping List

Besides jeans and sweaters, athleisure will likely get the most use in our wardrobes this season. Athleta makes great athleisure basics like the Venice jogger. I’ve stopped spending a lot on t-shirts and sweatshirts in favor of various brands at Target, including A New Day. I think you ought to walk on the wild side in these faux leather joggers by Spanx. You may not wear shoes while working from home, but if you do, get a pair of Allbirds wool runners. They earn an A+ in comfort. I am partial to the natural grey. These black and white Adidas Superstar sneakers are cool. I like the metallic gold V on these Veja sneakers and the Velcro closure. And the perforated black leather slip-on sneaker by Keds is the right amount of casual plus cool.

One Aspirational Piece
UllaTop 1024x851 - Your Fall Shopping List
Ulla Johnson top purchased from The Real Real.

When shopping this fall, don’t dismiss fancier pieces. As I mentioned near the end of my podcast last month, we need things that add excitement to our closet. I recently purchased two “aspirational” pieces from The Real Real, an Ulla Johnson velvet top (photographed here) and a Zero+Maria Cornejo “graffiti” printed dress. Whether it is a shoe, a piece of jewelry or a garment, you deserve one piece that makes you optimistic for dressier days ahead.
