The Classic Dresser & The Natural Dresser

To avoid delaying this study of the 7 most common style personalities any further, I am going to cover the last two in one post: the classic dresser and the natural dresser.

The Classic Dresser is drawn towards neutral colors, traditional prints and simple styles. She prefers semi-fitted and tailored clothing, quality fabrics and a coordinated appearance. She does not generally follow trends, although she adopts trends once they become a classic. She does not take unnecessary risk with her appearance and she prefers to be noticed for her elegant manner rather than for her wardrobe. Her makeup is neutral and her hairstyle is well-managed, and she rarely makes changes to either. She likes conservatively-styled bags, shoes and jewelry. The Classic Dresser’s wardrobe is somewhat formal, as well as polished, timeless and sharp.

The Natural Dresser keeps her look simple and organic. She enjoys her own beauty to shine through with little embellishment. She favors a relaxed fit and natural fabrics. Comfort is very important to her. If she wears pattern, it often replicates one found in nature. She also prefers “nature” colors or neutrals. She is not greatly concerned with her appearance, and she spends little time on her hair and makeup. She likes easy care fabrics. The Natural Dresser appears relaxed, and her wardrobe shuns complexity.

As I said in the first post, you can be a mixture of these personal styles or perhaps you give your style a completely different name from the ones I have featured. For instance, my style recipe is feminine, dramatic, unexpected, artistic. If you look across the personal styles I have featured, I believe my personal style most embodies a blend between the modern/chic dresser and the dramatic dresser, but I have chosen for now not to give my style the modern/chic title. Maybe later. We’ll see. That’s the beauty of one’s personal style. You can call it anything you like as long as you know what it looks like to you.

The Elegant Dresser

I am covering the most common style personalities to assist you in identifying your unique personal style. First, I profiled the Modern/Chic Dresser. Next, I presented the Creative/Artistic Dresser, followed by Feminine/Romantic Dresser. Earlier this week, I gave you the Dramatic Dresser.

Now, let’s discuss the Elegant Dresser. The Elegant Dresser has very expensive, refined taste. Her clothing is made of fine fabrics like cashmere, silk, buttery leather and fine wool. Every piece of her clothing is tailored to perfection. She favors lighter neutral colors like champagne, beige and camel, and when she wears color it is generally a solid. She favors designer brands and most of the styles she wears have a classic, timeless quality. Her hair is controlled and her makeup is neutral. Her jewelry includes genuine pearls, diamonds and other precious gems, and she loves the best handbags and shoes. The Elegant Dresser appears rich and poised.

You may know an Elegant Dresser, and chances are she is either a very successful business woman, or she has no need to work at all. The Dramatic Dresser

Let’s continue our study of the 7 most common style personalities. The Dramatic Dresser enjoys standing out in a crowd, and she loves experimenting with her personal style. She prefers a tailored to tight fit and smooth fabrics. Shine and shimmer appeal to her, and she chooses fashion over comfort any day of the week. If a shoe hurts but it looks fabulous on her, she will wear it anyway. She likes big, bold patterns and high contrast. She enjoys bright colors and dark neutrals. Her accessories are generally large scale and weighty. She is meticulous with her appearance, and she loves to experiment with new makeup trends and the latest hair styles and hair colors. The Dramatic Woman appears daring, and her wardrobe is never dull.

The Feminine/Romantic Dresser

Oh, this category of dress is one that many women fall into, at least in small part. Who doesn’t love a beautiful dress or a skirt now and again? The true feminine/romantic loves to dress up and she enjoys softly-structured clothing. She prefers light to medium color depth and low to medium color contrast. She loves floral prints, as well as a ruffle, lace, appliqué and bows. She is often drawn towards draped garments and/or semi-fitted styles, and she favors skirts and dresses over jeans and pants. Her hair is softly styled, tousled or curled. Her makeup is soft and pretty, leaning towards rosy shades. The Feminine/Romantic Dresser is drawn towards retro handbags and her shoes usually have a rounded or pointed toe box with dainty heels. She appears graceful and refined, and her wardrobe is tasteful, while reflecting a celebration of the feminine form.

The Modern/Chic Dresser

I think women are greatly confused when they shop for clothes. There are a plethora of colors, styles and fabrics. Where does one begin? It is difficult to know where to start unless you know your brand (aka your personal style). Therefore, I’d like to profile the most common personal styles in my blog over the course of 7 posts in the hopes that it helps you find your personal style so you can better identify which items are right for you. Let’s begin with the Modern/Chic dresser.

The Modern/Chic Dresser stays on top of trends and is willing to wear unconventional items. She can match unrelated garments and patterns and still appear pulled together and chic. She enjoys layering clothing, and she looks for pieces that have unusual construction or unexpected details. She likes clean construction and current shapes, textiles and colors. Her clothes fit her impeccably. She understands accessories complete an outfit, and she likes the latest in shoes, bags and jewelry. Her makeup and hair are carefully managed but not fussy. The Modern/Chic Dresser appears powerful and assertive, and her wardrobe is always changing and moving forward. I’ve put together a collage of items in Polyvore, which I think embody the Modern/Chic dresser.

By the way, once I have profiled the 7 most common personal styles, you may find you identify with one, two or a few of them, and that is okay. Taking Your Image From College Girl To Woman

I was recently asked by Angie Schuller Wyatt, award winning author of a book and blog by the same name, God and Boobs, to write a short piece about transitioning one’s image from college to career while maintaining one’s youthful appeal. You can view the post on her blog here. However, I thought I would also share the full text of my contribution below for my many (ha!) blog subscribers. This is a common issue, one I experienced when leaving college, so I am grateful to Angie for raising the question so I could properly address it in print. I hope you enjoy it!

As you wave goodbye to your college alma mater, degree clutched tightly in your hands, you have high hopes and expectations for your future. However, as you stare into your closet surveying your wardrobe, you are dismayed to find it is not filled with the things one would associate with a woman poised to conquer the world. Since you know image matters and a first impression is of the highest importance, you are in a quandary.

Never fear, I have three simple steps to conquering this very common wardrobe dilemma:

(1) Shop Differently. In other words, buy your grown woman clothes from stores you used to bypass in college. For the most part, you will not find nice career clothing where you buy “disposable” casual and/or party clothes.

(2) Acquire Quality Classics. Start collecting the classics such as a leather handbag, closed-toe heels, a white blouse, a LBD and a trench coat. Buy the best quality you can afford as these items, when purchased well, will last you 10+ years. These pieces are investments.

(3) Brand Yourself. How would you describe your style? How do you want to be known in your career? What are the words you want people to say when you walk in the room? Write your answers and from there make a list of 4 – 5 words that best describe you and your brand. Then start dressing like it. If you are concerned about looking too old, be sure your wardrobe includes color, patterns and quality accessories. Accessories finish outfits, and the right ones keep your look youthful, fresh and modern.
