New Year, New Style Mindset

December 20, 2022 by Bethany Siggins

As we close out 2022, here is a little “style food” for thought. The many “to dos” during the holiday season are exhausting. So, let’s take a step back as we enter 2023 with an open mindset about our image and style. Rather than attacking personal style as we have our holiday tasks, let go of expectations of what your style “should be” so that it can be something fresh and new, aligned with who you are today.

My wish for you and for me is that we always look current and stylish. While it is always my goal to educate clients on style rules, I want my clients to wisely break the rules as it suits the situation and as it fits with their personal style and personality. Style has little to do with following a rigid set of rules. You might say that style begins where rules end.

That said, here are five tips for opening your style to new possibilities in the New Year:

Stop Following Trends

Yes, you read that correctly. While it is important to remain abreast of the season’s trends so your fashion knowledge is current, trend-following is an exercise in futility. Over my 15 years as a style coach, I have read countless lists of what’s in and what’s out, only to find the list has flip-flopped a few months later. Rather than spending energy on the “it” things of the season, focus on acquiring what you love and wear it with joy. If the item isn’t a current trend, wear it like it is because at some point it will be. Then, you can take credit for getting the trend started!

Ignore Seasonal Rules

You know the list: no white after Labor Day, no suede in spring/summer, no patent leather shoes in winter, etc.  If fashion designers are no longer following seasonal style rules, why should you? While I suggest you dress appropriately for your climate (i.e. leather in mid-summer in Dallas just won’t do), I also encourage you to toss a few seasonal rules out your window. They are not as relevant as they once were. This opens the door to greater creativity and fun with your style.

Wear Less Makeup (or more)

If you normally make a bold statement with your makeup, peddle it back a bit and notice how fresh and alive you look with a more natural face. If you normally wear a mostly bare face, try a pop of color on your lips, go a bit thicker with eye liner or try a rosy hue on your cheeks. Others get used to your makeup routine as much as you do. By periodically changing your makeup, it keeps everyone guessing and makes getting ready a lot more fun.

Let Your Hair Be Free

Bad hair days feel ruinous. By working with your natural hair texture, you will have fewer bad hair days because you won’t be fighting what your hair does naturally. If your hair is in between textures, try curling it in the humid months of spring and summer, and smoothing it in the fall and winter. Make peace with your hair texture, and you’ll save yourself a lot of trouble and look amazing.

Accept Your Body Shape

Time spent anguishing over the number on your bathroom scale is wasted. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important, but so is accepting and loving your natural body shape. Get rid of expectations of being a certain size and begin dressing your body in a way that gives it balance. As soon as you forget about the numbers and start dressing joyfully in a way that flatters you, your style quotient will go through the roof!

Holiday Gifts that Give Back

November 29, 2022 by Bethany Siggins

It is my pleasure to share my holiday gift catalog here. Inside are great gifts for the home, for the tree, along with jewelry, food and lots of items you may not buy for yourself like trinket baskets, shopping totes and etched glass vases. What makes this catalog different are the companies within. Most of them are companies that operate sustainably and responsibly including Uncommon Goods, Unicef, Made Trade and The Little Market (purveyor of the tray below).

LittleMarketBowl - Holiday Gifts that Give Back

Enjoy the browse, and get something for yourself while you’re at it! As always, I am here to help. If you need assistance with your gift-giving this year, email me. I’d be delighted to assist!

Last Year’s Guide

HolidayGifts2021 1024x682 - Holiday Gifts that Give Back

I can’t help referencing last year’s gift guide because it is full of great ideas, a few local companies and all around wonderful businesses worth supporting. See the post and recommendations here. The recommended companies within include Juniper Ridge, Goodies Texas (based in McKinney), Morgan Mercantile in Fort Worth and Scout & Cellar (clean-crafted wine).

But Wait, There’s More

Holiday2022Catalog 1024x682 - Holiday Gifts that Give Back

I have been busily creating shopping catalogs the last couple of months to make your gift-giving and shopping easier. Here are a few catalogs worth a look:

  • The Nordstrom Gift Guide for Her is here.
  • The Nordstrom Gift Guide for Him is here.
  • Women’s Holiday Style catalog is here.

Since these catalogs were produced several weeks ago, you may find some items have sold out. Hop on it if your favorite things are still available. If you want to be the first to know about my shopping catalogs, be sure to subscribe to my newsletter on the home page of my website.

Foolproof Gift

As we anxiously ponder what gift to buy, the best gift of all is your time and attention. Who are you missing or have not seen in a while? Make a date for lunch, for a drink or simply for a fire-side chat at home to catch up. Don’t assume they are too busy this time of year. The holidays are fun for some but lonely for others. Check in on your friends and let them know you are thinking about them. Even if you aren’t able to get together, they’ll know that you care.

Stumped? Message me.

There’s no reason to stress at the holidays about what you will wear or what you will give. That’s what I’m here for. Send me a message so we can chat. Wishing you and yours a blessed and safe holiday season.

What to Ditch from Your Closet

October 10, 2022 by Bethany Siggins

As we enter a new season, now is a fantastic time to edit your wardrobe. Scrutinize last season’s clothes. Don’t pack away summer clothes you didn’t wear unless you TRULY plan to wear them next season. Also, be sure everything is cleaned before tucking them away. Otherwise, you might find a stain that has set in after several months of not wearing it.

As you edit, these are your low-hanging fruit:

  • Bad fit. Whether too small or too large, it does not work for you. Out it goes.
  • Wrong shape. Is it a flattering shape or silhouette? If not, ditch it.
  • Worn out. This one is an image-killer. If it is pilled, soiled, unraveled or stretched, toss it.
  • Wrong color. Does the color flatter you? If not, let it go. Not sure? Book a color analysis!
  • Damaged. Unless it can be repaired (and you plan to have it done), get rid of it.

Besides the above, let’s address other offenders which may need to go.

Fast Fashion

I own my fair share of pieces from companies and brands who are not utilizing resources in ethical ways, aka fast fashion. I own much less of it than I used to, but some pieces linger. If you can afford ethical brands, put your money there. I know for budgeting reasons we sometimes buy lower-priced pieces, and I’m not judging that. Buying something to wear once and toss it is another matter entirely. Luckily, many brands are responding to pressure to be more transparent and clean up their act. I am hopeful this trend continues.

As you buy new things, try to support brands that are Certified B Corporations, for example, and companies with ethical practices. It’s simply better for everyone. Madewell and Athleta are two of my favorite ethical brands.

Counterfeit Goods

This is an ugly, horrifying business. Besides the fact that creating counterfeit goods is illegal, when you knowingly buy counterfeit goods, you are supporting human trafficking and child labor, which is used to make these goods. Put your money in things you want to continue. Slave and child labor isn’t it. If you truly love designer goods but cannot afford it full-price, there are oodles of places to buy it second-hand. I like The Real Real and Poshmark. Sometimes you can nab something new with tags. There is no reason to ever knowingly buy counterfeit goods, especially when you have so many resale options.

Clothing Back Ups

You know these offenders. They are the pieces you keep around “just in case.” I’ve done this myself. If my ___ is dirty, I want to have this one as a back up. Guess what? 99% of the time you will not turn to the sub-par back up because you will wear something else entirely. If you want to remember an item to replace it, take a photo of it and donate it. Clothing back ups are dead weight in your closet.

Overly Trendy Items

You can spot these a mile away. Just last week at a store, I saw a cropped, plaid blazer with a rounded collar. Three trends in one item: cropped, plaid and round collar. You may have a few things in your closet you are holding onto for when the trend comes around again. Don’t hold onto it for these reasons: (1) You may not want to wear the trend again when it returns, and (2) The trend will likely come back in a slightly different form. If you decide to play in the trend when it comes back around, you don’t want to look like you pulled the dusty piece from the back of your closet.

Old Versions of You

If you keep your clothing a long time, you likely have pieces you needed for a certain time in your life, like suits for work. As I have said many times to my clients, I want your wardrobe to be a reflection of the woman you are today, not the woman you were 10+ years ago. It’s okay to have a piece for 10+ years if it still serves you today. I have many golden oldies in my closet that I continue to wear, and they still represent me. If you love a piece but it no longer fits into your life, let it go. It served you well even if you did not wear it that much.

Purchase Mistakes

You know the ones, pieces you bought after the salesperson or a friend said it looks great on you. You were persuaded to buy it, but once you got it home, you realized it did not work with anything else or it simply wasn’t “you.” I still make purchase mistakes, fewer than I used to, but no one is perfect. Even if it still has the tags on it, donate your purchase mistakes. If you are holding onto it waiting for the occasion to wear it, don’t. That occasion will not arrive. It was a mistake. Own up to it and move on. At the very least, purchase mistakes teach us what not to buy next time! Over time, you will make fewer mistakes as you hone in on your style and understand what works for you.

Not Sure? Call Me!

DitchFromCloset 1024x682 - What to Ditch from Your Closet

A wardrobe edit is always refreshing! Sometimes you find old treasures you are excited to wear again. Other times you find pieces you had forgotten about and with good reason. Making space in your closet allows better things to come in. You are never losing anything when you edit. There is so much need in the world. Why keep something that someone else can love?

The Fall Fashion Story – 2022 Edition

September 16, 2022 by Bethany Siggins

It’s almost that time of year where we can break out long pants and closed-toe shoes as we tuck away cotton dresses and sandals. Hooray! Fall has always been my favorite season for clothing and trends. Although my style preferences have changed over the years, my love for fall’s offerings has never wavered. Luckily, there is a lot to love this season.

The Fall Color Palette

As I showed on my fall color trends report, we have calm, soothing colors alongside energetic, joyful colors this season. While the palette seems contradictory, it simply emphasizes our need to be seen and to be comforted. The bright colors of the palette pair quite nicely with the softer colors, which I demonstrated in that post.

My Favorite Fall Colors

My favorite bold colors this season are Dragon Fire, Rose Violet and Samoan Sun.

PANTONE Dragon Fire2 1 - The Fall Fashion Story - 2022 Edition
PANTONE Rose Violet2 1 - The Fall Fashion Story - 2022 Edition
PANTONE SamoanSun2 - The Fall Fashion Story - 2022 Edition

From the quieter tones, I love Peach Caramel, Iced Coffee and Cardamom Seed.

PANTONE Peach Caramel2 - The Fall Fashion Story - 2022 Edition
PANTONE Iced Coffee2 - The Fall Fashion Story - 2022 Edition
PANTONE Cardamom Seed2 1 - The Fall Fashion Story - 2022 Edition

Runway Shows are for Show

As always, the looks on the runways serve to inspire us. Many of the clothes are not wearable in real life. However, these trends are usually translated into garments that we CAN wear day to day. Some of my favorite trends this year are fringe, denim, hot pink, statement leather and graphic prints.

Fall’s Most Wearable Trends

Amongst the most wearable trends of the season are straight leg denim, crisp white tops, ladylike heels and cozy knits. Remember to cast a critical eye on the trends, keeping your personal style in mind. Classic dressers likely won’t buy into bold prints, while modern dressers always find a way to express themselves in many of the current trends.

Your Fall Trends List

For those who love lists, besides those listed above, here are more top trends for fall in no particular order:

  • Stripes
  • Bold Colors
  • Belts
  • Platforms
  • Boyfriend Blazers
  • Low-rise pants & jeans
  • Lingerie Dressing
  • Sporty Styles
  • Loafers
  • Feathers
  • Mini Skirts & Long Skirts
  • Bucket Bags
  • Puffy Crossbody Bags
  • Pink, Yellow, Brown, Cobalt and Purple

Top Beauty Trends

  • Natural Hair Texture
  • Braids & Buns
  • Flushed Cheeks
  • Blue & Red Eye Shadow
  • Smudged Smoky Eye
  • Glowing Skin
  • Dark Lips
  • Red Lips (of course)

The Office Wear Conundrum

NewBizCasual 969x1024 - The Fall Fashion Story - 2022 Edition

Now than many of us are returning to the office, at least on a part-time basis, we are in a quandary about what to wear. The sweats at home are heavenly, and we don’t want to sacrifice that comfort. Luckily, you don’t have to. Brands are finding ways to bring comfort into office-appropriate pieces. The pieces in the collage above are in my shoppable fall catalog.

The Office Challenge

I started my first career in the 90’s when matched suits were normal office attire. So you can image that joggers at the office will take some getting used to for those my age and above. However, we can’t lose touch with what is current because that may communicate losing touch in other areas. The challenge to the older generation (raising my hand) is to stay in step with the times. While the challenge for the younger generation is to not get caught in the “too casual” trap.

See my Fall Catalog for great office ideas! Whether you like dressed up or down, the catalog covers it.

Bethany’s Fall Picks

ayrtop - The Fall Fashion Story - 2022 Edition

Amongst my top picks for the season are the striped Ayr top, which would be beautiful under fall’s boyfriend blazers or alone with jewelry and jeans for a day to night look.

BlankNYCMoto 819x1024 - The Fall Fashion Story - 2022 Edition

The Blank NYC moto jacket is vegan leather and a wonderful price point. Everyone, regardless of their style type, can pull off a moto jacket. The cropped length of this one works well for those who are petite or those who want to fake longer legs (me).

MMLaFleurJogger2 - The Fall Fashion Story - 2022 Edition

The M.M. LaFleur Delaney Jogger is your new “power casual” piece that works for the office as well as for home. Pieces like this are the future of office attire, and I’m there for it.

ScotchSodaJacket2 - The Fall Fashion Story - 2022 Edition

I can’t get enough of the Scotch & Soda reversible bomber jacket. The bomber jacket is a very popular silhouette this fall. This jacket has a spring print on one side, which I love. Who says fall florals must be dark? It is olive on the reverse side, one of the top colors of the season. This jacket works for a casual office look and for weekend/off hours, too.

NisoloClogs - The Fall Fashion Story - 2022 Edition

Clogs are super-hot for fall. I’ve been eyeing a sustainable company called Nisolo for a while, and I like this style, which comes in two colors. The black version is here. I bought a similar pair two years ago, and I’ve worn them with my straight jeans and wider leg pants.

FrancesValentinePump - The Fall Fashion Story - 2022 Edition

I’m hard crushing on this splurgy Frances Valentine block heel pump. It comes in four colors, and it is selling FAST on the Nordstrom website. So, if you love it, jump on it. And, yes, patent leather for fall is okay (for those who remember that old rule).

Fall2022Look 969x1024 - The Fall Fashion Story - 2022 Edition

Well, what do you know? Several of the picks above make a fun look!

Bethany’s Fall Catalog

I’ve created a fall catalog that includes some of my fall favorites so far. The photo here includes just a few of the great finds inside the catalog.

As always, I can shop with you either in person or virtually, so please email me if you’d like to set up a personalized shop. I take the stress out of fall shopping. All you have to do is show up and try on!

The Fall Spirit in a Nutshell

I love what Riccardo Tisci of Burberry had to say about his fall collection.

People don’t want to be put into boxes anymore.

Amen to that, Ricardo! You are your own person with your own distinct style. Let it shine! Trends come and trends go, but your personal style is forever. Thank you for reading the blog. Message me if I can support you in your style journey. I’d love to be of service!

How To Wear Fall/Winter 2022 Colors

August 17, 2022 by Bethany Siggins

Bringing Fall into Your Style Now

Fall temperatures won’t arrive in most areas of Texas for a few more months. However, as I’ve preached over many years of blogging, one of the best ways to bring “fall” into your wardrobe when it remains hot is to wear the colors of fall. What we see in the Pantone color palette below are several colors that are atypical for the fall season. Therefore, wearing fall colors now will look like an extension of your spring and summer wardrobe. How simple is that?

PantoneFW2022PaletteJPG 1024x1024 - How To Wear Fall/Winter 2022 Colors

Fashion Rules are Old School

For years now, designers have been nudging us towards a “no rules” fashion mindset. Leather and suede in spring? Sure! Moody florals in the summer? Why not? Bright colors in the fall? Well, there’s an idea. At a time of year when we experience less daylight and, in some areas, more rain, wearing bright colors is just the thing to put a pep in our step.

Fall’s Dark Neutrals

PANTONE Blueberry2 - How To Wear Fall/Winter 2022 Colors
PANTONE Quiet Shade2 - How To Wear Fall/Winter 2022 Colors
PANTONE Chicory Coffee2 - How To Wear Fall/Winter 2022 Colors

In place of black this fall is a deep navy blue called Blueberry (these are Pantone names). Amen to this shift. After all, I’ve rarely worked with a client who said they need more black in their closet. Per usual for fall, there is a medium gray tone. This one is called Quiet Shade, and there is a dark brown called Chicory Coffee. These three neutrals pair well with the brighter colors in the fall palette such as Spicy Mustard, Dragon Fire, Watersprout.

PANTONE Spicy Mustard2 - How To Wear Fall/Winter 2022 Colors
PANTONE Dragon Fire2 - How To Wear Fall/Winter 2022 Colors
PANTONE Watersprout2 - How To Wear Fall/Winter 2022 Colors

Earthy Greens Remain Popular

PANTONE Cardamom Seed2 - How To Wear Fall/Winter 2022 Colors
PANTONE Loden Frost2 - How To Wear Fall/Winter 2022 Colors
PANTONE Martini Olive2 - How To Wear Fall/Winter 2022 Colors

Also present in this season’s palette are the earthy greens we’ve grown used to seeing in the stores. We have Cardamom Seed, Loden Frost, and Martini Olive (above) and Abundant Green (below), a vibrant equivalent to emerald. Any of these greens would pair nicely with the warm medium-toned brown called Caramel Café and a light, warm neutral called Autumn Blonde (below).

PANTONE Abundant Green2 1 - How To Wear Fall/Winter 2022 Colors
PANTONE Caramel Cafe2 - How To Wear Fall/Winter 2022 Colors
PANTONE Autumn Blonde2 - How To Wear Fall/Winter 2022 Colors

Pair Bright Colors With Neutrals

PANTONE Rose Violet2 - How To Wear Fall/Winter 2022 Colors

It’s exciting to see a bright pink in the fall/winter palette. This one is called Rose Violet. I love to ground a bright color with a neutral to allow the vibrant color to take the lead. Rose Violet would pair quite nicely with Cardamom Seed (above), as well as Quiet Shade, Tapioca and Blueberry (below).

PANTONE Quiet Shade2 1 - How To Wear Fall/Winter 2022 Colors
PANTONE Tapioca2 - How To Wear Fall/Winter 2022 Colors
PANTONE Blueberry2 1 - How To Wear Fall/Winter 2022 Colors

I do custom color analysis for clients, which pinpoints your best colors to wear. Color trends aside, it is important to know which of these colors you wear well. After all, wearing your best colors helps you appear healthy, vibrant, and youthful. Your color fan saves you time in the stores, and it assists you in removing unattractive colors from your wardrobe.

Message me to learn more or to schedule your custom color analysis.

Have fun playing with color this fall and winter seasons. Aspire to inspire others with your energizing ensembles. See you out there!

Aging Makeup Mishaps

July 26, 2022 by Bethany Siggins

Not Another Anti-Aging Post

As I expressed earlier this year in Episode 39 of my podcast, I am not focused on anti-aging. In fact, I proposed in that episode that we be “anti” anti-aging. Time passes at the same rate for everyone, and the years inevitably show on our faces and our bodies. No one escapes aging. Now that I’m fifty, I want to look and feel my best, period. That’s what this blog post is focused on.

As I said in my May blog post, which focused on “aging” clothing, don’t take the list below as gospel. Instead, reflect on my advice and, if needed, make a few tweaks to keep your makeup modern and fresh. The goal isn’t to look younger but simply our best. Most of the time, that means doing things a little differently than we did them 10+ years ago.

Aging Offenders

There are exceptions to all of these mishaps, and sometimes I completely break them, especially for evening events! That said, here are the top offenders.

Applying with a heavy hand

Walk into any store with a makeup counter, and you’ll see pretty saleswomen wearing lots of gorgeous makeup. They’re selling makeup, after all. In real life, heavy makeup does not translate well. In the last few years, I have been learning to wear less makeup even though I’ve worn a full face of makeup for decades. As I’m seeing more wrinkles and less elasticity in my skin, I’m realizing less is more. I want to glow, and heavy makeup covers the glow. Besides, it settles into creases and it’s distracting.

As Bobbi Brown says in her book, Bobbi Brown Beauty, her beauty style is “modern, pared-down and realistic.” Her makeup philosophy is about a face “that is pretty not because it is perfectly painted… but because it is smooth, natural and healthy looking.”

SkinTintSmaller 1 - Aging Makeup Mishaps

The Solution: try a skin tint or a lighter foundation. My favorite foundation product right now is Dr. Jart’s BB cream. It is full coverage, but it leaves the skin glowing. It is skin care and foundation in one. Supply is low at Sephora, so I suggest buying directly from Dr. Jart’s website. He has two BB creams, one with SPF 30 here and another with SPF 40 here. I also love Glossier’s skin tint (photo above). To cover spots around your eyes, nose and other areas, I recommend a concealer pencil over foundation like this one by NYX. Apply only where you need it and pat into the skin to blend.

Metallic and colored eye shadows

Guilty! Do you know how difficult it is to find non-metallic eye shadows? Oh, brother! As we age, metallic shadows emphasize the creases around our eyes and on our eye lids. Colored eye shadow can look harsh against aging skin, and sometimes it looks like we got stuck back in time. It’s best to stick with neutral colors.

makeup eye - Aging Makeup Mishaps

The Solution: matte neutral eye shadows. I love the NYX Ultimate Shadow Palette in Warm Neutrals. There are three matte neutrals on the second row that are perfect for daytime makeup.

Black eyeliner

Black is a wonderful liner for evening and dramatic looks. However, it is harsh on aging faces. Most of the time, black eye liner detracts from the natural beauty of your face.

eyeliner - Aging Makeup Mishaps

The Solution: try black/brown eyeliner. Black/brown creates a softer impact and allows your eyes to stand out. One of my favorites is L’Oreal Infallible Pencil Eyeliner.

Skipping bronzer or blush

Aging skin often loses its natural color and vitality. Therefore, it becomes more important to add a little bit of color on your cheeks, even if you have never worn cheek color before. No need to apply with a heavy hand. A little bit goes a long way. Be sure to blend it so we don’t see harsh lines.

Miracle Balm2 - Aging Makeup Mishaps

The Solution: add a bronzer or blush to the apples of your cheeks. I recommend a blush color that is close to the natural color of your lips. This bronzer by Jane Iredale has several color options. Cream blush is nice on aging skin that tends to be dry. Try this one by Ilia in one of the radiant finishes. The one I’m using now is the Miracle Balm by Jones Road Beauty (photo above). The color I’m using is bronze. Tawny is another nice color, as well as dusty rose and golden hour. I dab it onto my cheeks with my fingers and layer the color as needed for more depth. I love it on my lips, too.

Too much powder

Guilty, once again. I used to wear my makeup very matte by covering my foundation with lots of loose powder. Dry skin looks older. Dewy skin appears more vibrant and youthful.

WowderSmaller - Aging Makeup Mishaps

The Solution: strategically place powder around your face like the sides of your nose, under your eyes and along your jawline. The goal is to allow your skin to glow with a small amount of powder to keep makeup in place. I like Glossier’s Wowder (photo above). If you need a nice brush to apply it, I recommend Glossier’s wowder duo.

Not filling in your eyebrows

Eyebrows become less dense over time. Think of them as face accessories. Eyebrows frame your face, and they draw focus to your face, giving it balance.  A younger-looking face has full eyebrows.

WetNWildLiner - Aging Makeup Mishaps

The Solution: follow the natural shape of your brow to fill in sparse areas. I worked with a makeup artist to show me how to properly draw in my eyebrows. I highly recommend it! Plus, she told me about my new favorite brow pencil by Wet n Wild. I am using Ash Brown per her recommendation, and I love it.

Dark lipstick

I love a statement lip! But, once again, I am learning I appear my best in softer lip shades. As we age, we lose volume in our face, and this includes our lips. Dark lipsticks makes lips appear thinner. Lips appear most full when their color is close to the natural lip color.

Ultra Lip Smaller - Aging Makeup Mishaps

The Solution: wear a color that blends nicely with your face and body colors. Fill in lips with a natural lip pencil and cover with a soft lip color for long-staying power. Glossier’s Generation G is a sheer matte lipstick that won’t appear too saturated or dark.

Not prepping your skin

It goes without saying that if you aren’t taking good care of your skin, makeup will not look as natural and beautiful on your face. As I mentioned above with blush and bronzer, a little bit goes a long way with skincare.

The solution: adopt a simple skincare routine. There are many brands out there. If you’d like a few names, check out my blog post about my skincare routine here. The routine I recommend is a gentle cleanser, a toner, a serum, and sunscreen for day. Apply a moisturizer suitable for your skin type after serum at night. That’s it. Click the links to see product recommendations. Once you’re used to a simple skincare routine, it will become second nature. Your skin will thank you!
