My Glossier Recommendations

October 7, 2021 by Bethany Siggins

I know I’m late to the Glossier party! But I have arrived and I’m loving it. For those unfamiliar with Glossier, it started as a beauty blog website Into the Gloss in 2010. Into the Gloss is still an active blog where they discuss products, careers and what beauty means to women today. In 2014, Glossier was launched as a modern beauty brand creating products inspired by the people who use them.

After months of “thinking about it,” I recently pulled the trigger and received a box full of fantastic products. Can I say how happy the soft pink of their packaging and bottles makes me? It totally takes me back to the 80’s when my mom sold Mary Kay Cosmetics. I’m glad Mary Kay no longer has a corner on this color.

Without further delay, here’s what I bought and my thoughts on each.

GlossierBodyHeroOilSmaller - My Glossier Recommendations

Body Hero Daily Oil Wash

I had just run out of my Fresh shower gel, so the daily oil wash came just in time. This, like all Glossier products, has a very light fragrance. I can be sensitive to fragrance, but this one is not strong. I promise. The website describes it as Orange Blossom Neroli Blend (a subtle baby fresh scent). This seven-oil blend turns to a slightly soapy texture when you add water. It is skin-softening and not drying. This will be perfect for dry winter skin. Thumbs up! Buy it here.

HandCreamSmaller - My Glossier Recommendations

Hand Cream

This hand cream is magical. It is not greasy and it absorbs quickly. My two favorite hand creams have been Kiehl’s and Aveda, but this one beats them both. Once again, the fragrance is fresh and clean, not a strong scent. I’m sold! Get it here.

MilkyJellyCleanserSmaller - My Glossier Recommendations

Milky Jelly Cleanser

This is a gel cleanser that uses Poloxamer, the same cleansing agent used in contact lens solution. So, it is safe for your eyes and it won’t sting when you remove mascara. I find a second application is needed to remove all of my eye makeup, but overall, this is a great softening cleanser. I lean toward using it in the morning when I’m not removing makeup. Get it here.

FutureDewSmaller - My Glossier Recommendations

Futuredew

This is a lightweight oil/serum hybrid. When you want your skin to have a special glow, apply this product after all of your skincare steps but before your makeup. Or skip makeup and go natural. This feels light on my skin, not greasy. It contains plant-based extracts that help brighten your skin over time. Apply this before going to a special event. With the holidays approaching, this is a great product to fake a healthy glow when you’re running low on energy. Get it here.

SkinTintSmaller - My Glossier Recommendations

Perfecting Skin Tint

I am not a skin tint person. Anytime I see “lightweight coverage,” I need to pass. I am a medium-full coverage kind of gal. For those who love lightweight coverage, this is a wonderful skin tint. It feels amazing on the skin. It is moisturizing and minimizes the appearance of pores. Since I prefer more coverage, I use Susan Posnick’s ColorFlo over Glossier’s skin tint, and it’s perfect. I’m wearing this combo in the photo on this post. It comes in 12 shades. Get it here.

stretchconcealersmaller - My Glossier Recommendations

Stretch Concealer

This concealer is buildable and super creamy. It goes on smoothly. That said, be careful with your mascara if you wear mascara on your bottom lashes. When I applied this concealer under my entire eye area, I notice my mascara depositing under my eyes. Now, I lightly apply the concealer only where I have darkness. Then, I cover it with powder to set it. I love this concealer. It comes in 12 shades. Get it here.

WowderSmaller - My Glossier Recommendations

Wowder

If you like to set your makeup with powder, this is a brilliant product. It does not leave you looking matte or chalky. It cuts down on shine and minimizes the appearance of pores. But somehow you still have a wonderful glow. I am a big fan. It comes in five shades. Get it here.

CloudPaint smaller - My Glossier Recommendations

Cloud Paint

This is a gel cream blush that goes on sheer after the first application. Don’t be scared by the bright color initially. It blends! You can build it to your desired depth. I apply this after my foundation but before I set my face with Wowder. Use the Wowder to blend away extra blush pigment, if needed. I purchased the beam, which is a soft peach. It comes in eight shades. Get a duo of colors here. I recommend a bright, lighter color for daytime and deeper color for evening.

Ultra Lip Smaller - My Glossier Recommendations

Ultralip

It’s a balm, a lip gloss and a buildable lip tint rolled into one product. I love the sheer look, which is perfect for early fall. After a year of hiding behind a mask, it feels like a real treat for my lips. It is super moisturizing and soft. I got Vesper, a rich fuchsia. I’m wearing it in the photo in this post. It comes in nine gorgeous shades. Buy it here.

Other products

A few other products I’ve read favorable reviews of but have not yet tried are the balm dotcom (a do everything lip balm), lash slick mascara, body hero daily perfecting cream, haloscope and brow flick.

A Few Sets

To save a little on multiple products, I recommend these sets: The Makeup Set, Milky Jelly Cleanser + Futuredew, Wowder Duo (powder + brush), Body Hero Duo (oil wash & body lotion) and The Makeup Set on Vacation.

Your Favorites?

Dish! What are your favorite Glossier products? If you have none, which of my recommendations are you curious to try? I’m happy to answer your questions and offer guidance.

I love updating my beauty products in the fall. It’s a great time to pamper your skin after the summer sun. If you want help deciding what to buy, comment here or email me at bethany@bethanysiggins.com.

Happy Glossier shopping!

New Year New Skincare

January 13, 2021 by Bethany Siggins

Are you a New Year’s resolutions person? I generally am not, although I enjoy identifying a word or a phrase of the year. This year, many are shunning resolutions, and who can blame them after last year? At a time when many things still seem difficult to accomplish, taking great care of your skin is very doable. One thing last year taught us is to take good care of ourselves. A good skincare regimen is part of that. Below is my skincare routine with links to purchase. Give it a go. You only get one face!

Too Many Products

Last year, one of my most popular videos was a discussion about skincare. You can find the video on my YouTube channel here. Prior to making the video, I had grown confused by the many options in my arsenal. I had a lot of great products, but I didn’t know when to use each one or whether or not it was okay to mix one with another.

Learn What to Use and When

To conquer my confusion, I had a consultation with Ivey Ray, a New York City-based makeup artist and skincare consultant. She helped me understand which products to use when (day or night) and in which order. She can do this for you, too. DM her!

After my consult with Ivey, I read a blog post by skincare expert Renee Rouleau. In it, she advised a rotation of products: two days of a retinol product, followed by two days of an exfoliating product, followed by two days of a gentle serum. I am following her advice, and my skin is happy.

My Top Criteria

#1 on my list for a skincare product is NO fragrance. Why? Fragrance does not make a product work better. It is an old school marketing technique (i.e. not innovative). Fragrance runs the risk of irritating your skin, so why take the risk? Once you are used to no fragrance, you will never go back.

Step #1 Gentle Cleansing

moisture boost cleanser 1 - New Year New Skincare

My favorite evening cleanser is Paula’s Choice Moisture Boost One Step Face Cleanser. I have aging skin that tends to be dry. This cleanser removes all my makeup, while keeping my skin soft and moisturized. My kids also use it and love it. In the morning, I like CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser. It contains hyaluronic acid, which holds 1,000 times its weight in moisture. This means your skin looks immediately plumper (goodbye fine lines).

Sometimes I use an oil cleanser to remove my makeup. I like Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil, followed by the CeraVe cleanser above. Note: I do not wet my face before applying the oil, and I do not rinse the oil before I use the CeraVe cleanser. After massaging each into my skin, I rinse with warm water (never hot).

Step #2 Non-alcohol Toner

thayerstoner 1 - New Year New Skincare

A toner should never contain alcohol, which strips and dries the skin. Toner removes anything left behind by tap water and it levels the skin’s pH, making it easier to accept the treatment products that follow. Lately, I’ve been enjoying Thayers Facial Toner. I’m linking to the Lemon. I know I said no fragrance, but this is subtle and refreshing. I also like the Lavender and Cucumber versions. I also like Paula’s Choice moisture boost toner, and this calming toner is nice.

Step #3 Treatment

c15 super booster - New Year New Skincare

During the day, I use a Vitamin C serum by Paula’s Choice to boost my skin’s glow and protect it from harmful free radicals. Want to learn more about “oxidative stress” and Vitamin C serum? Read this cool blog post by Renee Rouleau. The “Mercedes” of Vitamin C serums is the one by Skinceuticals. I tried a sample and enjoyed it! Ultimately, I decided to save the extra $100 and stick with Paula’s Choice. CeraVe makes a budget-friendly one.

Two evenings per week, I use a retinol product. Presently, I’m using this one by La Roche-Posay. I’ve used the 1% Retinol Treatment by Paula’s Choice with good success. The Honest Company makes one, too.

The next two evenings, I use an Alpha Hydroxy Acid lotion to gently exfoliate my skin. I use Paula’s Choice 8% AHA Lotion Exfoliant. The reason exfoliation is important is because dead skin cells need to be removed to reveal the fresh skin beneath. I prefer not to scrub my skin, which is sensitive. As a side note, Beta Hydroxy Acid products go deeper into the skin. It is a good choice for those with acne prone skin.

The next two evenings I use a gentle serum. The two serums I am rotating between right now are Paula’s Choice Triple Algae Pollution Shield and Power Berry Serum. For years, I used their Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum with Retinol. I stopped using it because I began using a separate retinol product. This could be a good serum for bundling retinol with other powerful antioxidants.

Step #4 Moisturize

ultra facial cream - New Year New Skincare

During the day, it is important to use a moisturizer with SPF. At a minimum, look for 30 SPF, although many dermatologists recommend SPF 50 or greater. I do not like the smell of sunscreen. I am amazed the Daily Moisurizing Lotion SPF 30 by Paula’s Choice has none of the telltale scent. She also makes one with SPF 50. The sunscreen I am using right now is this one by Olay. I am disappointed it has a light fragrance, however. CeraVe makes a nice one with SPF 30.

In the evening, I love Paula’s Choice Replenishing Moisturizer. On the lighter side, I love Cetaphil’s Daily Hydrating Lotion. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream is super yummy, although I tend to avoid jar products as a general rule because the active ingredients degrade more quickly with their exposure to air.

Extra Steps

turmeric radiance mask - New Year New Skincare

On occasion, I use a face mask to boost the benefits of my skincare routine. For years, one of my favorites has been the Kiehl’s Tumeric & Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Masque. It has a bit of “scrub” to it and a fragrance, but I don’t mind. The results are amazing. Another Kiehl’s mask I love is their Avocado Nourishing Hydration Mask. Another long-time favorite mask is the Detox Face Mask by Malin+Goetz.

Eye Cream?

This is where I need your help. What are your favorites? For years, I have not been using an eye cream. To depuff in the mornings, I sometimes use Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Eye De-Puffer. It works. I’ve recently started using a sample size of Kiehl’s Vitamin C Eye Serum. Goodness knows, I can use help in the dark circles department. I’m super curious to try L’Oreal’s True Match Eye Cream in a Concealer. Who has used that one? Do tell!

Start Small

If all of this information is overwhelming, start with one product like a good cleanser or a good moisturizer. Then, slowly build your arsenal. I have been a novice skincare student for over 20 years, and I’ve tried many products. These are the ones I’ve settled into, but I am open to others. So, please share your favorites in the comments. I keep a running list of great beauty products to try.

Happy New Year! This year, take control where you can! It is never too late (or too early) to take great care of your skin.
