My Favorite Sustainable Denim Labels

June 4, 2021 by Bethany Siggins

Why Sustainable?

Sustainable is a word we can’t escape. It’s a booming trend in fashion, including recycling garments into new ones and using textiles that are compostable. Fashion must lead the charge in sustainable efforts, first of all, because it created a giant mess. The industry churns out 80 billion garments per year and employs every sixth person on the planet. Unfortunately, fashion fell into many bad practices in pursuit of a stronger bottom line. Simply said, fashion pollutes our environment and exploits its garment workers so that we can have cheap, fast fashion.

Another reason fashion must lead the sustainable charge is the amount of waste it produces. Newsflash: we don’t need 80 billion garments per year. Mountains of fashion end up in landfills or incinerators. Americans throw away 14 million tons of clothing every year. Sadly, most textiles take over 200 years to decompose!

The more I learned about the ills within the fashion industry, I knew I had to make changes to my buying habits. In Episode 31 of my podcast, “My Better Quality Pledge,” I promised to purchase better quality garments for my wardrobe this year and going forward.

Why Denim?

I have many sustainable companies to share with you in future posts. I’m starting with denim for a few reasons. Women own on average 7 pairs of jeans (I own 15). Worldwide, we purchase 1.2 billion pairs of jeans each year. It takes 396 gallons of water to produce ONE pair of jeans. Multiply those gallons by 1.2 billion pairs. That is a lot of water. Additionally, over 90% of jeans are dyed with synthetic indigo. What is synthetic indigo? It contains chemicals such as cyanide, formaldehyde and sometimes aniline, all of which are harmful to human health and aquatic life. While reading the book Fashionopolis, I learned the rivers near overseas denim mills run blue, affecting the health of residents and workers, not to mention the creatures in those waters.

The List

Vogue recently wrote an article featuring 16 sustainable denim collections to know about. My list only repeats two of the brands in Vogue’s article, so be sure to check their list here.

My list is by NO MEANS a comprehensive list of sustainable denim makers. The more I dig, the more I find. That’s a great problem. If you love jeans, and you want to do a good thing for the planet, these are brands to support.

Everlane

Everlane’s tagline is “Modern basics; Radical transparency.” Their denim factory partner in Vietnam recycles 98% of their water using reverse osmosis filtration. They keep byproducts out of the environment by mixing them with concrete to make building materials. Wow! Everlane makes a variety of denim styles for women from flare to curvy to straight and skinny. Their 90’s “Cheeky” jeans linked here are a best seller (this pair is 100% cotton). I like this bone colored pair that has some stretch. This style has an 11″ inseam and a straight, cropped fit. See all the Cheeky styles here.

Levi’s

Levi’s wants us to buy better and wear longer. As the creator of denim, Levi’s is on the front lines of new denim technology to create quality denim that’s thoughtful with the earth’s resources. With Levi’s® SecondHand, they invite us to join them in a more sustainable future. According to their website, if everyone bought one used item this year, instead of buying new, it would save 449 million pounds of waste. Levi’s 501s remain a favorite style worldwide. In fact, May 20 is 501 day! I am linking a cropped style in a lighter wash here. Bonus, they are nicely marked down.

Boyish

Boyish is a carbon-neutral women’s brand. They are committed to leaving as little impact on the earth as possible. Boyish uses sustainable fabrics and employs a cruelty-free, environmentally friendly process. On their website, they say, “The only impact Boyish leaves on the planet is good jeans.” I am linking the Tommy Straight jean in white. It has a raw hem and non-stretch denim (this takes getting used to). Here’s one with stretch.

Nudie Jeans

Nudie Jeans’ vision is to become the most sustainable denim company. They only work with organic cotton, and they pay living wages to employees throughout the manufacturing chain. This includes spinning, dyeing, knitting, printing and laundry. Nudie also repairs and collects jeans. The Breezy Britt Light Desert jeans is a high rise with a slight taper. This style comes in a variety of lengths. Tall girls rejoice!

Madewell

Madewell’s tagline is simple: “We make great jeans.” Madewell uses a fair-trade certified factory in Vietnam. Beyond denim, Madewell creates things we wear with denim, like effortless tees, keep-forever bags, cool jewelry and fun shoes. They produce a Do Well Report annually to keep consumers informed on new initiatives and products. This report also focuses on how they are improving their sustainability practices across its operations. More than half of their styles are sustainable in some way and the label identifies these styles. Find the “Do Well” section of their site here.

I own two pairs of Madewell’s “perfect vintage jeans,” one medium blue and one soft white, which I’m linking here. They have an 11” rise and a 28” inseam. I’m also linking their curvy vintage jeans here, which comes in standard, petite and tall lengths. Madewell will take your old jeans (any brand) in store, and they will give you $20 credit toward a new pair of full-priced jeans! Learn more about that program here.

Agolde

Agolde makes sustainable and comfortable denim. They use advanced methods like laser technology, ozone machines and high-efficiency wash methods. One of their best sellers is the “Criss Cross Upsized” jeans, a 90’s-inspired style. It features an overlap fly, a 10-3/4″ rise and a 30″ inseam. Beware, it is a non-stretch denim. However, it is a relaxed style. I like their Lana Crop Mid Rise Vintage Straight Jeans here (they are also non-stretch yet relaxed). See more styles on their website.

Blue Delta Jeans

Blue Delta Jeans’ motto is “one size fits one” because they make their jeans specific to your measurements. Their jeans are grown and milled in the U.S., as well as handmade in the U.S. Blue Delta makes raw denim jeans that are dry clean only. This means it is a specialty care item for your dry cleaner. Luckily, they advise cleaning your jeans only once or twice a year. Their styles vary including boot, straight, skinny, flare and cigarette. While not cheap at $450 per pair, Blue Delta makes a nice addition for denim connoisseurs. Visit their website to learn more.

Hiut Denim

Hiut Denim is based in the U.K. Their motto is “We make jeans. That’s it. Do one thing well.” Hiut is focused on making the best jeans, not the most jeans. Their jeans are made in Wales by men and women who have crafted jeans most of their lives. Hiut only uses the best denim from the best mills in the world. Prices run from 175 pounds to 225 pounds. Find their women’s styles here.

RE/DONE

Sean Barron and Jamie Mazur founded RE/DONE while bonding over heritage classics. They longed for perfectly tailored, vintage Levi’s. Thus, RE/DONE launched in 2014 with the simple idea of taking the old and making it new again. This pivoted the fashion industry toward a more responsible future. RE/DONE’s first run of 300 pairs instantly sold out. A waiting list with thousands of people sparked demand for more. RE/DONE is now available through a variety of retailers and on their own website. I like their soft black High-Rise Stovepipe Comfort Stretch available from Saks Fifth Avenue. See all their styles on their website.

BethanyJeans2 1024x768 - My Favorite Sustainable Denim Labels
Jeans by J.Crew painted by Kathy Sparkman
J. Crew

J. Crew has a “Re-Imagined” initiative. From the people who create their products to the impact they have on the planet, J. Crew is committed to doing better at every step of the way. Their 2025 goal through this initiative is that 100% of their key fibers will be sustainably sourced, including all of their cotton. Shop their “Re-Imagined” styles here.

The J. Crew Responsible Sourcing Program clearly communicates their expectations to their suppliers, and it monitors and improves working conditions at the facilities that manufacture J. Crew products. The jeans I am wearing are from the J. Crew Point Sur collection, which is no longer available. Artist Kathy Sparkman painted them. The design was inspired by a striped pair of jeans I owned in the mid-80s. I like this classic vintage jean in faded indigo from J. Crew Factory.

MUD Jeans

MUD Jeans is a sustainable and fair trade certified denim brand based in The Netherlands. They tout themselves as the world’s first circular denim brand. Every pair of MUD Jeans contain up to 40% post-consumer recycled denim, the highest percentage out there. They have a nifty video on their website about recycling their denim. See it here. Their process uses 92% less water than average jeans, and no pesticides are used.

MUD has a purchase and a rent option for their jeans. See more about leasing their jeans here. Find all their women’s styles here. I like the Relaxed Fred styled rolled as shown.

Outland Denim

Outland Denim is an Australian denim company that landed on the world’s radar after Megan Markle wore a pair in her 2018 royal tour of Australia. They employ victims of sex trafficking, and so far 750 people have benefited from stable employment with Outland Denim in Cambodia. Outland uses up to 86% less water, 57% less energy, and 83% less chemicals in their wash and finishing facilities. They source the finest raw materials from suppliers who share in their mission and excel in social and environmental responsibility. See their women’s jeans here. I am partial to the Lucy.

Who Makes Your Favorite?

As I said above, this list simply scratches the surface. Please share your favorite sustainable denim brands in the comments. If you’d like help navigating the many options online or in the stores, send me an e-mail at bethany@bethanysiggins.com. I’d love to help you. Happy shopping! Let me know what you buy!

Summer Style Over 40

April 7, 2021 by Bethany Siggins

My Dilemma

I noticed it a handful of years ago. I could not find a pair of shorts that fell past upper thigh. Everything was short, short, short. I thought it was a passing thing, and I told myself next summer would be easier. Nope. All the shorts were short, short, short. So, I began to default to dresses and skirts for summertime with a few pairs of chinos sprinkled in. Shorts were for around the house only.

Recently, a friend of mine and I were lamenting the problem of the “too short” shorts, and she said I should create a catalog of pieces for women over 40. So, I did!

Your Shopping Catalog

Click here to shop the catalog. Not only does my catalog contain shorts in a variety of lengths from 5 – 9,” I also include tops, pants, skirts, dresses, sandals and sneakers to give you a well-rounded selection.

Most of the pieces in this catalog are relaxed and casual. However, many of them can be dressed up with a cute jacket or the right shoe and accessories. Message me if I can help you decide which of these pieces are right for you. I can do a personalized shop for you, too.

Guidelines for Over 40 Summer Style

As you know, I’m not much for rules. However, a few general style guidelines are helpful. Determining what is “age appropriate” is difficult to pin down. As I’ve discussed over the years, it depends on the person. What works for one may not work for another for a variety of reasons. It mostly comes down to what works well on your body and how you feel when you wear it. If it feels too young, it is. Donate it.

Here are my guidelines for summer style over 40.

Simplify the Look

Often, the fussier the piece, the more youthful it appears. This includes ties, zippers, ribbons, appliqués, ruffles and flounces. However, there is always a way to wear things you love. When wearing a “youthful” piece, keep the rest of your outfit streamlined and classic.

Longer is Classy

This goes for shorts, dresses and skirts. For skirts and dresses, just under the knee length is a flattering place to stop. The nice thing about this length is you don’t have to worry how high it rises when you sit down. It will fall just above your knee when you sit, which is perfect. Choosing the right length for shorts depends on your height and proportions. Generally, try to keep shorts to a length of 5” or longer. Longer shorts can be hemmed to the right length for you. Better to buy too long and get them altered than to buy too short.

Wear Flattering Colors

The colors you wear over 40 are especially important as our body colors begin to soften with age. While it was once easy to experiment with all the colors of the rainbow, find colors that make you look vibrant and energized. If your default is black, try navy. Add color pops to your neutrals.

If you are unsure about your most flattering colors, I can do a custom color analysis for you. Your custom color fan is one-of-a-kind, and it’s a helpful shopping tool and a great companion at the makeup counter, too. Contact me to get your color fan!

Play in Accessories

Accessories do a great job telling your story. They are your personality pieces. Be thoughtful about your choices, and invest well here. If accessories have been an afterthought, put focus here this season. A great shoe/sandal, a nice handbag and well-chosen jewelry take your look to the next level.

I’m Here to Help

If you are not sure what to buy this season, message me. Together, we will edit your wardrobe and make sure the pieces you buy are the ones you truly need.

Have fun shopping the catalog, and let me know what you buy!

Note: Some, though not all, of the links in the catalog are with affiliated retailers, who pay me a small commission for your purchases. This is always appreciated!

Girl, Get Back in Your Pants

March 10, 2021 by Bethany Siggins

Ladies, breaking news! There are comfortable pants on the market that are NOT workout pants! Can you believe it?! (Can you hear my sarcasm?) During that past year of mostly being home and wearing only sweats or yoga pants, there is an in-between pant that has pushed its way to the forefront. They slip on easily, so you won’t find them less comfortable than what you are already wearing. And they are 100x more stylish!

Time to Tuck Away the Yoga Pants

You must be feeling kind of bored pulling on your yoga pants every day. I wear them, too (for yoga), and they are not as comfortable as the pants I’m sharing in this post. With the snug fit of yoga pants, there’s a lot of pulling and tugging to get them on just right. And they leave nothing to the imagination. With the pants in my catalog, the fit is slim but not tight, so they look much more polished and they provide a balanced look.

Welcome to Your New Go-To Pants

My favorites come from a variety of retailers, and I’ve only scratched the surface. For this post, I’ve created a nifty catalog where you can see all my selections in one place for easy browsing and purchasing if you are inclined. There’s truly no excuse to keep wearing yoga pants with so many great options! Happy shopping! Let me know what you get.

Spring 2021 Fashion & Trends

February 5, 2021 by Bethany Siggins

Spring will be here before we know it. As I shared in my fall fashion blog post, adding special pieces to our wardrobe creates excitement for the future. I am ready to see my friends again! And when I do, I’d like to wear something new to celebrate the occasion.

Pantone’s Color Palette

Pantone’s 2021 Colors of the Year are Illuminating, a bright, happy yellow, and Ultimate Gray. Pantone describes this color combination as: A marriage of color conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting. Below is the full 2021 Spring/Summer palette, which includes both Illuminating on the top row and Ultimate Gray on the bottom.

PANTONEpalette Spring Summer 2021 683x1024 - Spring 2021 Fashion & Trends

Top Spring 2021 Fashion Trends

Fashion designers delivered many happy color choices besides those in the above palette. They gave us cherry red, periwinkle, bubblegum pink, tangerine, cobalt and neon brights. This season you will see a lot of buttery neutrals, as well.

The notable spring/summer fashion trends from the runways were:

Bold texture and volume

Color blocking

Statement stripes

Strong shoulders & feminine power suits

Delicate day dresses

Luxurious knits

Statement earrings & sunglasses

Low block heels, slipper shoes & clogs

Flat sandals and flatforms

Sneakers with everything

As you update your wardrobe for the season, look at your handbags and shoes first. I offered this advice in my fall blog post, too. The reason for this is handbags and shoes get the most mileage and create the greatest impact on your look. In short, they are your greatest investment pieces.

Your Spring Updates

In no particular order are my ideas for wardrobe refreshers this season.

Lightweight Jacket

cropped denim jacket - Spring 2021 Fashion & Trends

This cropped khaki jacket by Levis goes with dark jeans and t-shirts in the early spring. Once it’s hot, throw it on over a strappy summer dress for sips on the patio. This cropped style creates the appearance of longer legs. For those with long legs, try this denim jacket by Veronica Beard that hits at the high hip. It will create a vertically balanced body.

Spring Everyday Sandals

brownsandals - Spring 2021 Fashion & Trends

I could wear this flatform sandal by Schutz every day. I love this warm, rich neutral, which is a nice change from the “skin tone” neutral we see all the time. The braiding adds interest. This works with dresses, shorts and cotton pants. For those who like a little bit of elevation, a low block heel is your most modern look. This one by Sam Edelman could be dressed up or down. I am partial to the white with the python heel and the gold.

Statement Sneaker

sunset sneakers - Spring 2021 Fashion & Trends

Just go for it. Go big or go home, I say. I dare anyone to mess with you in this brightly colored sneaker by Puma. If you’re comfortable doing so, wear this with t-shirt dresses and flirty skirts. If not, try it with an ankle cropped jean or chino. A less showy style is this classic adidas superstar sneaker. I love mine.

Summer Tote

neoprene tote bag - Spring 2021 Fashion & Trends

This neoprene tote by Seafolly will create happy, beach-y vibes even if you have no seaside plans. Orange and florals are two hot seasonal trends, and neoprene is durable and easy to care for. For evening, switch to this darling Boden clutch in either Kelly green or happy yellow.

Summer Dress

laurie linen dress 1 - Spring 2021 Fashion & Trends

I’m crushing hard on this Boden linen shift dress. It ranges in sizes from 2-22. Petite and tall sizes are available, as well. This is the perfect dress for sneakers, but it also works with sandals or flip flops. For those who like a classic belted shirt style dress, this blue and white striped one by Tommy Hilfiger fits the bill.

Shop My Closet

November 18, 2020 by Bethany Siggins

Bethany, where can I get that?

Since July, I have been creating videos from inside my closet. Since some of you have expressed interest in pieces I have used in my videos, I am linking similar items below! I shop a lot of resale and hold onto my clothing for 4-5 years on average. For that reason, I can’t link exact pieces in most cases. Happy Browsing!

The Animal Print Blazer
LeopardBlazer - Shop My Closet

This blazer by Ann Taylor is similar to mine, though it has a light background. I love it for its versatility. It is not a serious blazer, but because it is a classic cut it does not stand out in a crazy way. My favorite way to style it is shown here. You could also wear it over a work dress or over a slinky dress and heels for evening. I enjoy styling leopard print with a bright color like cobalt blue or hot pink.

Once upon a time I had a gray-toned leopard top coat that I wore the heck out of. This one by Banana Republic is almost its twin! I am sorely tempted.

SequinCardi 804x1024 - Shop My Closet
The Sequin Cardi

This cardi available at Yoox is a cardi coat, whereas mine is short. The beauty of the cardi coat is it can be dressed up or down. Wear a cardi coat open. Style it over a top and pants or jeans or over a sweater dress. For a shorter sequin cardi, try this one.

A few non-sequin options: this velvet kimono (the printed one), this black/white leopard long cardi or this shimmer cropped one.

The Preppy Blazer
PlaidBlazer2 840x1024 - Shop My Closet

My blazer is navy with red under the collar, but this plaid one from Macy’s is way cuter! It also has red under the collar. The great thing about this plaid is it doesn’t look “holiday,” so you can wear it all winter. The photo does not show the buttons well, but they can be easily changed out to your taste. If you like navy, this one by Lauren Ralph Lauren is similar to mine. Ralph Lauren is the king of sharp blazers.

LeopardJacket - Shop My Closet
Sporty Leopard Jacket

Mine is t-shirt material, but this one by Nic+Zoe is a bit thicker. For this reason, it could be worn farther into the fall season and it looks a bit dressier. This one from Amazon is a knit like mine, and I love that it goes up to size 3X! While we are talking sporty, I love this thicker jacket by Athleta. It would take your weekend look up a notch!

The Statement Blazer
PinkBlazer 1 - Shop My Closet

I’ve shown you a tuxedo-style blazer from my closet, as well as a bright pink corduroy blazer. One I’ve not yet shown you is my soft pink velvet blazer from J. Crew. This year, it comes in four colors. I love the bright pink one! It’s a similar color to my corduroy blazer. To give it a dressier look, change the tortoise buttons to gold. That’s what I did!

FairIsleSweater 1 - Shop My Closet
The Fun Cardi

As I have mentioned in videos, a plain cardigan can be… well, kind of plain. Even in a bright color, a solid-colored cardi lacks pizazz. One of my favorite acquisitions last year was a colorful striped and sequin cardi by Marc by Marc Jacobs. The colorful Boden cardi here has the same fun factor! While you’re at it, get one for your dog! Just for grins, check out this wild one by Stella McCartney. This orange and gray animal print cardi is also spendy but darling.

Links to My Outfit
MePinkBlazer 768x1024 - Shop My Closet

For once, I’m wearing pieces you can buy! The Parke Blazer from J. Crew, already linked above, and the zebra sweater from Banana Republic. My platform sneakers are Marc Fisher and no longer available. However, Sam Edelman has a great one! For the faux leather bottoms, I have two suggestions, either the Commando Perfect Control legging (runs small and fits tight to the leg) or the Spanx leather-like jogger, which fits looser on the leg. The ones I’m wearing here fit more like a jogger and are from J. Crew Factory.

Bethany’s Outfit Formula

As I’ve shared numerous times, an outfit is created using three pieces:

(1) a basic, (2) an interest piece and (3) a “completer” piece.

See this video for a demonstration on how to create outfits. As you can see, I often lean on jackets and blazers. I think they are cool and an easy way to transform a simple top and jeans. In a follow-up video, I showed how to change the vibe of an outfit using jackets. To see any of my videos on YouTube, go here.

Don’t Wait to Buy

Retailers are now carrying less inventory, which leads to less waste (a great thing). However, that means if you love something here, get it now. Waiting might backfire as pieces are selling out quickly.

Please let me know what you buy! If you’d like a personalized online shop for yourself or a loved one, shoot me an e-mail. The holidays are stressful enough without having to think about what to buy and where to find it.

Wishing you and yours a restful, healthy and stylish Thanksgiving!

Your Fall Shopping List

October 8, 2020 by Bethany Siggins

Are We Still Shopping?

I’ve written blogs, produced videos and podcasted the last several months about simplifying your wardrobe, editing wisely and creating the wardrobe of your dreams. All of this suggests less buying. Perhaps. However, it mostly suggests using a lot more thought about what we have and what we need, which might lead to fewer purchases in the end. I think that’s a good thing. Fashionista reported results of a survey this summer which reflected we are still shopping, but we are putting more thought into our purchases. Their survey showed buyers were mostly picking up athleisure and basics like jeans, t-shirts, bras and underwear.

MadewellTote 1024x683 - Your Fall Shopping List
I got my fall shopping started with this Madewell tote.

What to Buy Now

Now that the seasons are changing, I wonder if there is a way to buy practically while adding spice to our fall wardrobes. I think so, and I’ve created the shopping recommendations below (with links to purchase) with that goal in mind. Spend first where it makes sense and where you will get your most use.

Look at Your Most Used Items First

Pieces we use over and over are handbags and shoes. This means you get your money’s worth, but it also means they wear out more quickly. When you assess your fall wardrobe, look through bags and shoes first. A good cobbler can restore scuffed bags and shoes, but if they are worse for the wear, replace them.

Next, look at your fall apparel. Be sure you have a great jacket above everything else because a jacket will get the most wear of any other apparel piece in your closet (assuming you live in a climate where the seasons change). Before we jump into my recommendations, let’s quickly review the top fall trends.

Fall 2020 Fashion Trends

In case you missed the rundown of the top trends for fall 2020 on my September podcast, here they are: shaggy coats, exaggerated fringe, moody florals, velvet suiting, Victorian blouses, pointed shoulders, ruffled collars, puffy sleeves, punk plaid, tailored 70’s silhouettes and slinky silhouettes, tough boots, chunky heels and platforms.

The top colors are lilac, powder blue, buttery tones, burnt orange, gold, petal pink, bright red, black and white, head-to-toe red and head-to-toe black. I love the unexpected addition of pastels to the fall season.

Opposites Attract

The styling for fall 2020 was a juxtaposition of opposites. We had lug sole boots with Victorian dresses, taffeta with latex, trousers with hoodies, street wear with work wear, and cut outs on modest silhouettes. I love wearing opposites in outfits. In fact, I spoke about it in a recent video. It keeps the outfit balanced, not too much of one thing.

Your Shopping List

Trends aside, here are my recommendations for Fall 2020.

Daytime Bag

TB Tote - Your Fall Shopping List

Because our evening events lean more casual these days as we gather on patios and in back yards, I recommend a day bag that you can use in the evening. My favorite style is the tote for its practicality. It easily fits everything, and the straps are usually long enough to comfortably wear on your shoulder. I recently purchased the Madewell Medium Transport tote (in the photo above), which I styled with a Tory Burch crossbody strap I’ve had for a couple of years. If you like a hands-free option, the Madewell tote comes with a thin crossbody strap, but it would look better with this blue and red strap from the Madewell x Kule collaboration.

A couple of other totes to consider are the Tory Burch soft pink ladylike tote (photo above), a dressier option, and the All Saints silver metallic tote, which is sure to turn heads.

Ankle Boots
ColeHaanChelsea 910x1024 - Your Fall Shopping List

I got deep into ankle boots during my time in Seattle, and I still love every pair. Sneakers aside, the ankle boot is the shoe style you will wear the most with your casual fall season outfits. I am partial to a lugsole boot right now, even if you have a feminine style. Who doesn’t need to feel a bit more tough and powerful these days? I like the black Madewell Andi Chelsea lugsole boot. On the slightly dressier side of ankle boots, I like the Cole Haan Valorie Bootie (photo to the right) and the Tory Burch Kira Bootie. If the Tory boots give you sticker shock, it is worth noting I have a pair of Tory Burch ankle boots from six years ago that still look as good as the day I bought them. Worth every penny.

Casual Jacket
BlancNoirJacket 668x1024 - Your Fall Shopping List

I am a jacket junkie. My recs include the LL Bean Ripstop Field Jacket. This lightweight jacket is great for an early fall ballgame or weekend errands. I fell for Blanc Noir in Seattle. I love this hooded moto (photo to the left). If you don’t have a moto jacket, the price on this one makes it a good candidate to test the waters. I also like their reversible bomber jacket because who doesn’t love two jackets in one? Sam Edelman has a short trench coat in a few colors. Lastly, the TopShop Shacket with contrast pockets is a jacket cut like a shirt (thus the name).

Straight Jeans
MadewellStraight 806x1024 - Your Fall Shopping List

Let’s face it, jeans are king in the fall. They look amazing with ankle boots and sweaters, the easiest, no-brainer outfit ever. My recommendation is a straight style because the looser, straight fit make them generally more flattering than a skinny jean. My favorites right now are the Madewell Perfect Vintage jeans. The Madewell Classic Straight jeans (photo to the right) are another good option. I like the wash on these jeans by Liverpool. Lastly, I love a bone colored jean in winter. They are a nice change of pace from the standard black, gray and blue. Everlane makes a nice pair. By the way, all of these jeans are high rise with an 11″ + rise. That will not work for short-waisted ladies. Instead, look for a mid-rise like this pair by Gap.

Standout Blouse
BlouseStandLookAwaySmaller 683x1024 - Your Fall Shopping List

With Zoom meetings continuing, bring in one or two eye-catching tops to stand out. White House Black Market has a couple of nice options. If you have warm coloring, try this red python print blouse. Otherwise, try this flattering teal smocked v-neck blouse. Animal print is always a winner. Veronica Beard has a lovely one. Be aware, this blouse is a final sale item. Lastly, I’m mad for this sheer MANGO ruffle printed blouse. Notice a trend? The blouses this season have oversized sleeves and a romantic flair.

Medium Width Belt
SezaneBeltBlouse - Your Fall Shopping List

Skip belts if you are large through your middle. Belts visually add weight and width. If you have a defined waistline, I recommend a medium width belt to add a finishing touch to your fall looks. After many years of the skinny style, belts with a more substantial width are “in.” I love the Artemis belt by Sezane (photo on the right). I am partial to the camel croco. This vegan leather snake print belt at Banana Republic is a nice change from standard brown and black and just as versatile. This dark brown croc leather belt from Club Monaco is chic.

Work from Home Wear
AllBirds - Your Fall Shopping List

Besides jeans and sweaters, athleisure will likely get the most use in our wardrobes this season. Athleta makes great athleisure basics like the Venice jogger. I’ve stopped spending a lot on t-shirts and sweatshirts in favor of various brands at Target, including A New Day. I think you ought to walk on the wild side in these faux leather joggers by Spanx. You may not wear shoes while working from home, but if you do, get a pair of Allbirds wool runners. They earn an A+ in comfort. I am partial to the natural grey. These black and white Adidas Superstar sneakers are cool. I like the metallic gold V on these Veja sneakers and the Velcro closure. And the perforated black leather slip-on sneaker by Keds is the right amount of casual plus cool.

One Aspirational Piece

When shopping this fall, don’t dismiss fancier pieces. As I mentioned near the end of my podcast last month, we need things that add excitement to our closet. I recently purchased two “aspirational” pieces from The Real Real, an Ulla Johnson velvet top (photographed here) and a Zero+Maria Cornejo “graffiti” printed dress. Whether it is a shoe, a piece of jewelry or a garment, you deserve one piece that makes you optimistic for dressier days ahead.
