The Pillars of My Brand

January 20, 2022 by Bethany Siggins

On the home page of my website, you’ll see:

The pillars of my brand are:

  • authenticity
  • a wise use of resources
  • thoughtfulness and
  • inclusiveness

Please read on if you’d like to understand what those pillars mean. It may better assist you in making a decision of whether or not I’m the style coach for you.

Authenticity

Great style comes from being yourself. You know the saying, “Be yourself. Everyone else is taken.” It’s true. There’s only one you, and there will never be another. For you to copy what someone else is doing with their style would be a disservice to yourself.

When I begin work with a client, we start with who they are and the story they want to tell through their image. Then it’s my job to guide him/her in ways of expressing that through their clothing and accessories. The better you know yourself, the greater your style can be.

If you put something on and it doesn’t feel right, it’s not. When you put something on, and you feel relaxed and happy, that’s what we are going for. That’s authenticity through your style.

A Wise Use of Resources

I believe in a wardrobe that’s supportive and expressive of you. I don’t believe in a wardrobe that is stuffed to the gills. Don’t get me wrong. I want you to have options. I personally love options. However, when shopping becomes a hobby or a habit, we find ourselves with too many options, unable to put together the outfits we imagined. That’s wasteful.

When you buy what you need and replace worn out items, this is a wise use of your resources. The fashion industry is cranking out many more pieces than we need or could ever wear, and our planet and its people are suffering for it. As I shared in my “Better Quality Pledge” podcast episode last year: Shoppers snap up five times more clothing today than they did in 1980, about 68 garments per year. As the drive to have the greatest profits increased, so did abuses in the industry. Garment workers in Latin America, Asia and other countries including our own are paid less than what they need to support their families, and they are often working in dangerous conditions for long hours.

When we stop buying fast fashion and supporting companies with exploitive practices, we get closer to a reformed fashion industry that considers the consequences of its actions. Put your money in things you want to survive. Buy what you will wear, preferably many times over the course of several years or more. That is a wise use of resources.

Thoughtfulness

Your image does not affect you alone. It affects those around you, as well. Do you ever see someone whose outfit gives you a boost? That’s a great gift they’ve given to the world and to themselves. I believe in thinking about who you are seeing and what you will be doing before you get dressed each day. I stand by what some might consider an old-fashioned notion of dressing as well as possible, showing respect to the occasion and to those you are spending time with. When you consider others, that’s thoughtful. It is very important that you are yourself (see pillar #1); however, an image that considers others is the cream of the crop. You are telling others they are important to you. You are showing them respect. By doing so, you garner respect, also. Everyone wins.

We are living in an age of anything goes. I don’t think it’s appropriate to wear to the same outfit to mow your lawn, to go to your office and to dine at a nice restaurant. When you differentiate between those activities with a different outfit, one that’s increasingly nicer than the previous, you are demonstrating great consideration, and your style will stand out.

Inclusiveness

I believe in keeping an open mind and an open heart to all opportunities and potential clients that come my way. That does not mean I say yes to all of them, but I don’t have a cemented idea of the things I will do and the people I will work with. Every situation is different. For anyone who wants to have a discovery call, I’m open to talking. In this exploration, we generally know if we are a fit for working together. Sometimes we don’t know until we are working together. But I’d rather try than say no and wonder if it might have worked.

Inclusiveness also resonates with me because I would love to break down the segmentation of our culture. I love having friends, associates and clients from all walks of life, various cultures, experiences and backgrounds. We have certain people we naturally gravitate to and want to spend time with, people like us. That’s human. But without realizing it, when we only spend time with people who are easy to spend time with, we are closing the door to enriching relationships that push us to be better, more educated and well-rounded.

In short, I love people, even the difficult ones. I want all of us to be friends! Silly, I know. But a gal can dream.

Thank you for going with me on this journey of exploring the pillars of my brand. The better you know me, the better you’ll know whether I’m a fit for you. If you’d like to schedule a call, message me through my website. I can’t wait to talk to you. Your best style awaits!

A Look Back: 10 Years of Blogging

May 5, 2020 by Bethany Siggins

fullsizeoutput 9493 1024x683 - A Look Back: 10 Years of Blogging

On March 26, 2010, I published my first blog post, aptly titled “Hello, World!” One could have never have imagined what the 10-year anniversary of my blog would be like on March 26, 2020.

C.S. Lewis wrote: “The great thing, if one can, is to stop regarding all the unpleasant things as interruptions of one’s ‘own,’ or ‘real’ life. The truth is of course that what one calls the interruptions are precisely one’s real life.”

Thank you, Mr. Lewis, for this wisdom. Now that I’ve (somewhat) found my footing in this new, temporary reality, let’s take a journey through the last 10 years of the blog.

My First Post

When I published my first post, I knew very little about blogging, and blogging was still fairly new. What I did know was I enjoyed writing. With countless other blogs out there, I wanted my blog to stand out.

An excerpt: “I got into image consulting to help people and to make a positive impact in their lives. So, here’s what my blog is about: I want to educate you, empower you, and help you become more aware of yourself, your style and your imprint on this world. I want to give you REAL information that will raise your awareness about image, style and fashion, as well as increase your confidence in your own personal style.” Read the full post here.

Shoes are a Hot Topic

Several months into writing my blog, I published “Your Shoes – They Matter.” An excerpt: “Everyone owns shoes that are purposeful. We have gym shoes, work shoes, evening shoes, etcetera. However, do you own a pair that communicates who you are?” Read the full post here.

My First Year of Blogging

I was very active in the first nine months of my blog publishing a total of 30 posts! Apparently, I had a lot to say. Then, the blog posts abruptly stopped for a year. There was a good reason for that. I had twins at the end of 2010, two months early! The next 12-14 months were a blur of bottles, diapers and burp cloths.

I began writing my blog again in early 2012. One of those first posts is aptly named “Seeing Double.” The title of course was in reference to my twins, but the post also contains five tips to shop smarter and not get overwhelmed. Read the full post here.

Don’t Wait to Lose Weight

Later in 2012, I published a post titled “Shop Right Where You Are.” This post discusses shopping for nice things now rather than waiting until you are at your ideal weight. It is very common to hear a potential client say she would like to lose weight before she works with me. However, in this post I make the case for not waiting. There is a client success story within. Read the full post here.

Stand Out For Being Yourself

One of my favorite blog posts from 2013 was a short, sweet one called “Be a Red Tulip.” In short, I encourage you to be yourself and to embrace the things that make you stand out. Read the full post here.

2014, the Year of Education

I was doing a lot of public speaking in 2014. As a result, my blog posts reflect topics I was speaking about including career style, a balanced wardrobe and body language.

A Few Guest Bloggers

It’s hard to believe I’ve only had a few guest bloggers. My first guest blogger was Deborah King of Final Touch who discussed civility, something we all need in giant doses right now! This blog was posted about two months into the start of my blog. However, it is a great refresher for what is happening in our world right now. An excerpt: “Civility deals with how we view and treat others. It requires us to look beyond our own interests and look to the interests and well-being of others.” Read the full post here.

My second guest blogger, my dear friend Deborah Hill, wrote a blog post called “Pregnancy Chic” about five months into the start of my blog. An excerpt: “Dressing chic during pregnancy is very easy, actually. The key is to NOT dress like you’re pregnant. In other words, dress your normal style in an accommodating size.” Read the full post here.

Seven years later in August 2017, I welcomed my third guest blogger, my younger brother, Marsh Buice. He wrote “It’s Not You, It’s Your Metabolism.” An excerpt: “To metabolize our lives differently, we must transform from a life of emotional resistance to a life of emotional resilience.” Those are words to digest right now! Read the full post here.

Fashion, Fashion & More Fashion

I’ve seen several amazing exhibits featuring incredible fashion designers over the years. However, I have only featured a few on my blog. They are in order: Oscar de la Renta, Jeremy Scott and Christian Dior.

The Blog Goes to the Dark Side

After we moved to Seattle in early 2015, I began to write more serious pieces including a popular one titled “Why I Allowed My Daughter to Cut Her Hair.” An excerpt: “Vivien is free to express herself through her personal image. While I still play the role of her mother, protecting, guiding and teaching her, she can make image choices for herself.” Read the full post here.

I reflected on the forced pause the move created in a post titled “When Life Demands a Pause.” This is a great one to re-read as the world is in a forced pause of sorts. An excerpt: “How wonderful to enjoy more time with my beautiful, kind children during these sweet, young years. My business can always get a re-boot. Our kids are only young once.” Read the full post here.

My Most Popular Post

The blog post that remains the most read of all, “The Day I was Asked to Move,” recounts a painful, embarrassing day. However, a few great lessons came from it. Read the full post here.

Southern in Seattle is Born

As I was finding my footing in Seattle, I launched a new blog in February 2017 called Southern in Seattle. The purpose of this blog was to share things I loved of the South with my Seattle audience and to also highlight southern things I found in Seattle (mostly food!). We have been back in Dallas for almost two years, but I’ve held onto the blog name, as well as the Instagram profile. I’ve kept it because it is part of my story. I want to remember our time in Seattle in a fond way. This blog emerging from that time is a wonderful result. My favorite blog post I have ever written across both of my blogs is on Southern in Seattle. It is my love letter to New Orleans. Read it here.

A Recent Favorite

One of my favorite blog posts in the more recent past is “Whose Style is it Anyway?” An excerpt: “We won’t always understand or agree with the fashion choices around us. It isn’t our job to. Our job is to find our own style and to work it fearlessly.” Read the full post here.

Do You Believe in Miracles?

You don’t want to miss my miracle story in “Tales from the Tarmac – A Girl & Her Orange Suitcase.” Customer service is not dead. Read the full post here.

Let’s Go for 10 More!

This blog has given me great joy over these last 10 years. It has allowed me to share encouraging words with you, my readers. It has helped me process my thoughts during difficulties, and it has kept me in touch with the good in others. While I started the blog for you, it has been a great help to me! I can’t imagine my life without it. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your support. There is more to come!

Whose Style is it Anyway?

March 8, 2019 by Bethany Siggins

Maya Rudolph stepped onto the Oscars red carpet two weeks ago in a bright pink, flowy caftan-style dress, and all the ladies watching at home clasped their pearls and collapsed onto the floor. Social media was atwitter over it. Not surprisingly, most people hated it (it was designed by Giambattista Valli, by the way).

My Thoughts

I did not love it, honestly. But, do you know what I did enjoy about it? I loved how she loved it. Look at her posture and her face in this photo. She is relaxed and comfortable. I think there is a slight “devil may care” look in her eyes, as well.

What is Personal Style?

Maya is doing her thing, and that is what personal style is all about. Style begins where fashion rules end. In case you don’t know, Maya Rudolph is a comedienne. She makes people laugh for a living. If she were to wear classic, stiff dresses, she would be doing herself a great disservice. Above all else, personal style must be a reflection of your person.

Personal Style Goes Beyond Rules

Fashion rules have their place. Yes, you should know your most flattering colors, the best shapes of clothing for your body type, the proper scale for accessories and prints, and the proportions that make you appear taller and slimmer. That is great information, but personal style looks deeper.

When searching for your personal style, it is important to understand what makes you happy. Consider your favorite colors and the words you would like others to associate with you. As you look deeper at yourself, you move closer to creating your style statement. Once you find a few style words that resonate with you, own them and dress like them. You may not know at first how to do this. That’s okay. Keep your style words in mind as you shop and as you edit your wardrobe. Your style words will guide you.

My Style Hero

fullsizeoutput 81fb - Whose Style is it Anyway?

My daughter Vivien, photographed here, is a tomboy who prefers boy-ish clothing with slight touches of feminine (note the lip color). She wears her hair in a pixie haircut, a style that flatters her fine-boned face. I took this photo before she went on a Daddy/daughter date night at our church last weekend. Her outfit is not what one would expect from an 8-year old. She adores her look, as you can see. To her credit, she doesn’t ask anyone to understand her style. Somehow, at her young age, she understands that being comfortable with her style is the most important thing.

Your Style is Yours

We won’t always understand or agree with the fashion choices around us. It isn’t our job to. Our job is to find our own style and to work it fearlessly. Are you with me? Message me if you’d like my help finding your style. It is a fun, exciting process!
